An immersive evening reflective of the bank’s unique private banking philosophy, one that celebrates the spirit of exploration
At the heart of every exploration lies a lesson. While the world can be frightening and unpredictable at times, venturing into the unknown can lead to extraordinary achievements. Standard Chartered approaches private banking with a spirit of expedition—a journey that started over 160 years ago, from operating out of tents in South Africa to facilitating trade throughout Asia, that now leads to being established in 53 markets across the world.
In case you missed it: The Spirit of Exploration: Standard Chartered’s journey of discovery
That’s the lesson behind Standard Chartered’s “A Night of Explorations”, an exclusive event that took place at the National Gallery Singapore on October 19.

Guests were invited to navigate and journey with Tatler Singapore and Standard Chartered into an experience inspired by lights and colours of the sky, stars and space. The night placed the spotlight on some of the world’s most acclaimed explorers, pairing fine dining with a series of inspirational fireside chats, celebrating those who embody the same pioneering instinct as the early years of the bank.

The event featured a specially curated five-course menu by Chef-owner Ivan Brehm of one-Michelin-starred Nouri. “Dishes were created to inspire a sense of novelty, discovery and mystery often associated with the impulse to brave new territories,” said Brehm. Every course was designed to challenge the diner’s notion of food through innovative displays of texture and presentation—take for example Bleu, Nouri’s newest dish that comes shockingly blue, a colour not traditionally associated with food. Mushroom pkhali dumplings came artfully arranged in a mushroom consommé in Orbit, Chef Brehm’s culinary take on astral bodies floating in space. For dessert, Orange As A Planet brought flavours of tea and the fruit together in a dehydrated peel.

For entertainment, Generative AI artist and photographer David Sheldrick created a visually arresting bespoke piece of work that was accompanied by ZingO, touted as one of the leaders in the Singapore Chinese drum scene. The end result is a captivating dialogue that explores the relationship between human and machine.

Fully embracing the concept of exploration, the night’s highlight was a keynote presentation by someone with a unique perspective of the world, having seen it from space—retired Nasa astronaut Leroy Chiao. Chiao served as commander on ISS Expedition 10, and shared his experience venturing into space, pushing one’s mental and physical prowess to the limits, and what it means to take a leap of faith. “Perhaps being an astronaut is as close to pushing the boundaries of exploration of humankind as we can think of,” said Vinay Gandhi, regional head of Asean and Middle East, Standard Chartered Private Bank.
Tatler Singapore’s editor-in-chief Aun Koh moderated an insightful fireside chat with Anna Gong, CEO and founder of Perx Technologies, where they discussed what it means to take risks, push boundaries and succeed in the tech industry.
