Tatler Asia's Most Influential 2023 honouree Martin Yu leads the charge for a digitalised shopping experience

Personalised and innovative shopping experiences—that’s what customers want these days. Shopee addresses this through the leadership of its director, Martin Stevenson Yu. Back then, Shopee’s application wasn’t as optimised as it is today. And in 2017, when Yu joined the company, he launched initiatives that reshaped the e-commerce landscape. From in-app games to live-streaming events and timely programs, all this helped shape Shopee into the e-commerce powerhouse we know and love today.

But how did all this happen? What’s in store for the future? All that and more will be answered in this article.

What projects in the last two years are you most proud of? Why?

Martin Yu (MY): Being part of Shopee means doing impactful work. I am proud that we can always ground our initiatives on our core mission of serving the underserved through technology. When we first launched Shopee Bayanihan in 2020, we assisted those whose livelihood was affected by the sudden lockdown. Today, Shopee Bayanihan continues to evolve as a multifaceted program with various initiatives catering to the needs of Filipino communities. In 2021, we launched the Resbakuna Vaccine Education Campaign in partnership with the DOH; the Fully Vaxxed package, which incentivised users to complete their vaccination doses; and Vaccination Center Support, which provided food, health essentials, and air coolers to chosen vaccination centres in Makati, Taguig, and Quezon City. Most recently, we opened an in-app donation portal under Shopee Bayanihan in partnership with various charity organisations to enable users to donate to those affected by Typhoon Karding. Through our initiatives so far, we have been able to help and serve millions of Filipinos by supporting our modern-day heroes, educating the public on important topics such as vaccination, and providing immediate relief to calamity-stricken areas. We are proud of our continuous work to digitalise and onboard as many MSMEs as possible. More and more Filipinos venture into the digital economy and experience the multiple benefits of e-commerce. One of our main priorities at Shopee is to continuously help our local MSMEs across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao to start, scale, and succeed through e-commerce. To do this, we have ramped up our seller initiatives in the country. This includes rolling out more programmes for our sellers in Visayas and Mindanao, including on-ground seller-focused events that help them understand the basics of setting up an online presence while equipping them with the tools to do just that. Earlier this year, we hosted the Shopee University Roadshow, a workshop designed to upskill online sellers, and Shopee Kumustahan, a roundtable discussion for local sellers in Davao and Cebu.

What challenges do you see now in your respective industry? How do you intend to help address these challenges?

MY: If you look at the DTI’s e-commerce roadmap, it highlights several factors to grow e-commerce: a fast, reliable, and affordable communications network, efficient financial and logistics systems and infrastructure. Growing e-commerce needs making the platform more accessible for all Filipinos, wherever they may be. As the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, Shopee believes that we can contribute in several ways:

1. Enable all Filipinos, most especially those from rural communities, to access and benefit from the digital economy

2. Help the local government advance the local digital economy

3. Maximise our platform to provide support to local businesses

4. Empower sellers to take their online business to the next level with dedicated programs and tools to aid them.

Through these initiatives, we work closely with our partners’ ecosystem to reap the benefits of digitisation for Filipinos while addressing the changing needs and habits of our shoppers, sellers, and brands. All in all, we aim to provide a reliable, seamless, and secure e-commerce experience for everyone.

What can you say to those who want to follow in your footsteps?

MY: I’ve learned that as your career progresses, what ultimately matters the most, as cliche as it sounds, are grit, determination, and hard work. I developed these early on—when I had to be deliberate about the school I wanted to attend and the course I wanted to take. These values helped me surpass challenges like landing my first job and eventually shifting from finance to e-commerce. My experience of being a leader and working in different fields has taught me that having enough grit is crucial so that, I don’t lose sight of my goals. Over the years, one thing that has never changed is my passion to make a difference through my work, which is one of the reasons why I chose to join Shopee. When you find that passion,  carry on even when you face seemingly insurmountable challenges. It is not only enough that you are skilled and talented—you need to be determined and willing to put in the hard work to be a good leader. It requires a lot of practice and a lot of trial and error, and a strong mindset to be able to bounce back every time.

Who do you look up to for guidance, inspiration or mentorship?

(MY): My mindset since I started working was to learn from people around me. That includes leaders that I’ve been fortunate enough to work with over the years. Through them, I learnt to lead people, prioritise, and most importantly, develop a career that leans towards doing good and improve the lives of the people around me. I’ve also realised as Shopee has grown over the years, I learn the most from the team I am surrounded with. When Shopee was starting here in the Philippines, I had to be coach-like and guide the team on how we could push the business forward. But as the teams grew and became stronger and bigger, I’ve learnt that hearing everyone’s inputs and feedback inspires me to be a better leader.

What are your plans for the coming years and what keeps you going?

MY: Our plans for the coming years will always boil down to one goal: to make e-commerce accessible to all Filipinos, wherever they are in the country. We want everyone to benefit from digitisation, and our strategies will always point towards that direction. We want to onboard even more MSMEs and help them grow online. We also continue to look at ways we can make shopping more convenient and enjoyable for our users, and we are committed to doing even more meaningful work for the communities that can benefit from e-commerce the most. Besides the teams that I lead and the people that have come to depend on our platform, what keeps me going is doing meaningful work that my sons can look up to. They’re still young, but it is never too early to teach them the value of choosing to do work that can help make the lives of others better. The support from my wife inspires me to do better, day in and day out, and I cannot be more grateful for the kind of family I have.
