Renewable energy is the way of the future. Prime Infra will make sure they have a hand on that

More often than not, the negative impacts of humankind and their activities on the environment are a constant reminder to us. Every day, we strive for conditions to turn 180, with groups, organisations, and advocates presenting different solutions and alternatives. One of those who consistently push to make a difference with renewable energy projects is Prime Infrastructure Capital Inc.

Last April 11, Prime Infra, owned and controlled by its chairman, Enrique Razon, held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new site for the renewable energy project. Through its Solar Tanauan Corporation unit, Prime Infra started the construction of 140-megawatt solar power plants in Tanauan, Batangas, and Maragondon, Cavite. It is its first solar power asset to be operational by year-end.

The project’s total annual generation capacity is estimated at 202-gigawatt hours, which is expected to power over 84,000 households and displace over 100,000 tons of coal annually.

Reducing the usage of fossil fuels is imperative to a healthy environment, and producing clean energy allows us to generate the energy we need without greenhouse gas emissions. “Prime Infra continues to address the need for dependable power supply as it aggressively supports the transition to clean energy and a low-carbon economy through our portfolio of renewable energy projects,” says Guillaume Lucci, president and CEO of Prime Infra.

The current president and CEO of Prime Infra is an engineer by training. “My career has always been focused on infrastructure ranging from oil and gas, bulk, cruise, and container terminals to shipyards, power plants, and water infrastructure, including subways,” he explains.

For him, some of the most exciting growth opportunities are in sustainable infrastructure. “I think being passionate about infrastructure development is also being passionate about inclusive economic growth, delivering essential services, and uplifting communities.”

Heading towards dependency on renewable energy sources

While everyone has a common goal of protecting the environment, their reasons and motivations may vary. For Lucci, it’s about taking it one step ahead. “We aim to put the Philippines on the map as a centre of excellence for power reliability. The country is already a leader in renewable energy, such as hydro and geothermal. We want to continue that path and further support the direction the country is taking,” he shares.

Apart from the Solar Tanauan project, the company also has Terra Solar in its pipeline, which is one of the largest solar photovoltaic and energy storage technology projects to be built worldwide. With both, the variability of the energy produced is reduced. Thus, reducing ancillary requirements and costs to keep the grid secure and stable. The three-year project construction will also generate approximately 10,000 local jobs.

The company is also investing in developing two pumped storage hydropower (PSH) projects—one in Rizal and one in Pakil, Laguna. The development of PSH plants also represents a move away from the traditional fossil fuel power for mid-merit and peaking. It also allows greater penetration of renewable energy sources as it absorbs and generates electricity to follow the variability of wind and solar plants.

“[In addition to] being a developer of game-changing renewable power projects, we are also now the operator of the Malampaya gas field, a critical energy asset that will play a key role in the energy transition as we move away from coal while supporting an ever-increasing power demand to sustain our nation’s economic growth,” shares Lucci.

Apart from renewable energy, Prime Infra also operates at scale with other business segments: water (including subsidiary Manila Water), waste management and sustainable fuels, and captures opportunities by leveraging intra-group synergies.

According to the Prime Infra CEO, we must support the Philippine Energy Plan in bridging the demand-supply gap by bringing together state-of-the-art renewable energy assets, energy efficiency, and technological expertise while supporting communities through sustainable and socially relevant development programmes.

Addressing the need for a dependable energy supply and accelerating the transition to sustainable energy is our future. “Through close collaboration [with partners], we will be able to deliver a project that will benefit generations to come.”
