These homegrown stores are on a mission to change Singapore’s sustainability scene for the better

Leading an eco-friendly lifestyle goes beyond reducing the use of plastic straws and single-use plastics. Swapping to a more conscious lifestyle means taking small and meaningful steps to change the way we live—and these steps, while small, can have a large impact.

Lucky for us, we have also seen various grocery, lifestyle and fashion brands offering products that can help us progress towards a more sustainable lifestyle. If you are looking to start on your eco-friendly and zero-waste journey, here are some local shops and brands to check out.

1. Your Sustainable Store

This online store’s curated range of sustainable products is both practical and stylish. Check out its selection of products from local brands including Mira’s soap bar, Ollie’s essential oils, and The Clean Attempt’s toothpaste powder. Apart from local artisans, find international brands like Stojo, a New York-based brand which offers collapsible takeaway cups and containers.

2. The Social Space

This multi-concept space promotes awareness of sustainability and conscious living through its cafe, fair trade retail area and nail salon. In the retail area, find eco and socially-conscious products from mineral salt deodorant sticks to insulated bamboo tumblers. If you’re just starting out on your journey to a zero-waste lifestyle, check out its zero-waste essentials section and find products like cutlery sets, reusable straws and bamboo toilet paper. The concept is also a platform for differently-abled people seeking to acquire skills and employment.

3. Minimakers

Singapore’s largest manufacturer of beeswax wraps, Minimakers work with locally based designers to produce planet-friendly wraps. Since 2021, the brand has also worked together with the Autism Resource Center to employ individuals on the spectrum. On its online store, find a wide selection of wraps in various sizes and fabrics. The Oink Oink is one of its best sellers and features fabric from local surface pattern designer The Patternholic.

4. Rough Beauty

Founded by the late Chew Jia Tian, Rough Beauty’s handcrafted bath and body products are made with natural botanical ingredients which have been sourced from around the world. A range of lightly scented soap bars are available, including the Mari Bar. One of its best sellers, this soap bar offers notes of bergamot, orange and grapefruit. Its Mari range is named after a rescued cat, and ten per cent of sales from this range will be donated to community cat rescue and trap, neuter, return (TNR) efforts in Singapore.

5. The Green Collective

With a mission of promoting conscious living, The Green Collective is a one-stop shop for all things sustainable. The store currently features over 50 locally grown brands on a rotating roster, offering a selection of items ranging from sustainable apparel to zero-waste utensils.

6. Thryft

Rather than purchasing new books, why not opt for books that have already been loved? Started by a group of students from NUS, Thryft is an online bookstore that sells second-hand books. A wide range of books are available, including textbooks, biographies, and local and international literature. What’s more, the bookstore allows us to trade in our old books for credits, which can be used to purchase even more books on the marketplace. The store also does occasional pop-ups around the island.

7. My Naked Bar

Ditch the store-bought soap and opt for handmade soap bars instead. This homegrown online store offers cold process soaps that are vegan, paraben free and synthetics-free. If you’re looking for a deep cleansing bar for sensitive skin, go for the Moroccan red clay bar. This light and floral bar is formulated with a six-oil blend and Moroccan red clay. The latter is known to cleanse and revitalise the skin. While those with eczema can go for the lavender oatmeal, a gentle and unscented bar that nourishes and soothes the skin.

8. ByKuraHome

This local multi-label retailer is on a mission to end disposable culture, by empowering others with sustainable alternatives. Visit the online store and find a plethora of eco-friendly essentials like collapsible lunch boxes, reusable grocery totes and reusable cleansing face rounds.

9. Bamboo Straw Girl

Founded by Melissa Lam in 2014, this homegrown brand is one of the first to bring reusable bamboo straws to Singapore. Its straws come in a range of sizes and are made from 100 per cent whole bamboo. On top of straws, this zero-waste lifestyle online store also offers a wide selection of products including wild beeswax wraps, bamboo dish scrubs and handmade soaps.
