Now that we're spending more time at home, it's become much easier to be eco-friendly. Here's how!

Staying at home makes it much easier to commit to the green movement. Here are a few fuss-free ways to help Mother Earth, even while in lockdown.

1. Work by the window

The best light is natural light! When working, try to sit near a window (or even outside on your balcony or patio). This is particularly wonderful for when it's breezy or cloudy out. You get to enjoy wonderful weather, a little bit of fresh air—plus, you avoid having to turn on the air conditioning or energy-consuming lights.

2. Wash full loads

When using the washing machine, we suggest making the best out of every load. Always do full loads (either as a family or with roommates) as this will cut down on both water and electricity. During lockdown, most people are likely going to be in house clothes. Take this time to delay doing the laundry and have clothes pile up before using the machine. Plus, if your machine has the option to use heated water, avoid turning that on too. Cold water washes just as well especially for items that aren't as fragile (i.e. house clothes).

3. Air-dry

After doing the laundry, it's time to dry the clothes. Today, we're making a case for the traditional sampayan. On sunny days, try hanging up clothes to dry instead of using a dryer. This goes for those with dishwashers as well. Instead of using the drying function, simply set your plates out on a rack and let the air do its work. It saves electricity without any extra effort on your part!

4. Pay attention to appliances being charged

Are you guilty of leaving appliances charging for too long? If so, you may want to reconsider. Once your appliance reaches full charge, it's best to unplug it right away. Leaving it plugged in means that it's still continuously drawing power. While this may not sound like a big deal, leaving multiple appliances on for hours at a time may mean a (cumulatively) bigger bill, and a bigger impact on Mother Earth.

5. Change your lightbulbs

If you have time to get handy around the house, then consider changing your light bulbs to LED ones. It's perhaps one of the easiest ways to help reduce impact, and it can benefit your home by adding brighter, more efficient lights into workplaces or communal areas. You don't have to change all the light bulbs either, but consider the ones you use most often.
