Celebrate the Christmas season through generous donations, fundraising concerts, and more

The preparation of presents, celebrations, and decorating of Christmas trees is in full swing as the holiday approaches. Stores everywhere have been stocking their shelves with heaps of gift ideas for your loved ones.

Don’t miss: The Best Places To Get Beautiful Live Christmas Trees in Singapore

As you go about doing your Christmas shopping for friends and family this year, it is also important to think about the less fortunate members of society too. From simply sending your donations to your favourite charities to partaking in a Christmas workshop, here are some ways to spread joy this season.

1. Shop at Christmas fairs

Instead of battling it out with the crowds in Orchard Road, take a more serene approach to shop this year at Christmas fairs around Singapore.

A notable fair spanning four weekends leading up to Christmas is Cluny Court’s annual Christmas Fair and Market. Available at the market are organic, low-waste daily care products, handcrafted clothing and Christmas decoration items, and even Santa Claus himself.

Look out for donation boxes placed at the fair and Santa’s Grotto as all donations will go to Autism Resource Centre (Singapore).

Visit the fair from December 1 to 4, 8 to 11, and 15 to 18 at Cluny Court.

2. Be Santa to underprivileged children

Make a child’s Christmas wish come true by granting a special gift. Be a secret Santa at Takashimaya Department Store’s Fulfil A Wish campaign held in conjunction with two Children’s foundations: Club Rainbow and Children’s Wishing Well.

Find the wishes of over 500 children at The Giving Tree, located at The Stage, Level 1. Simply pick a tag from the tree, go hunting for the perfect gift, and drop it off back at The Giving Tree.

From now till December 19, put a smile on a child’s face by going the extra mile and getting that perfect present. You can also show your support by taking part in an auction for Christmas paintings done by 30 of the foundation’s children.

3. Make donations online

The quickest, most efficient way to show your support for local charities and make hearty donations are through Giving.sg, Singapore’s one-stop platform for online donations and fundraising.

Find a charity close to your heart from a multitude of foundations including the Children-At-Risk Empowerment Association (Care Singapore), Friends of the Disabled Society, The Red Pencil (Singapore) and more.

4. Host a charity Christmas party

Celebrate with friends and family for a good cause this Christmas and turn your own gathering into a charity Christmas party. Instead of going out for a Christmas dinner, why not have one in the comfort of your own home?

As you think of scrumptious food to fill the Christmas table, create invitations that include a donation portion so that your guests are aware. The money raised can go to a charity of your choice, which can be decided upon together.

Set the donation box right at the entrance so that guests can immediately soak in the Christmas spirit of giving once they arrive.

5. Host a food drive

Shopping for groceries? Get a few extra food items for those in need. This Christmas, organise your very own food drive with your loved ones; it is a meaningful way for friends and family to band together in the name of ending food insecurity.

The Food Bank Singapore encourages donors to run food drives for at most two weeks. Once you’ve collected and assembled the food donations, you may either drop them off at the foundation’s various Bank Boxes islandwide (if you have below 5 kg of food), or at the foundation’s warehouse.

6. Donate gifts to the migrant worker community

The migrant worker community here in Singapore has contributed so much to our society. Working far from their families, this is one of the best times of the year to spread some Christmas cheer by giving them the gift of kindness.

From now till December 31, local organisation It's Raining Raincoats is accepting wrapped presents for migrant workers to show our appreciation for their efforts and endurance in building the nation we comfortably live in.

You may drop off wrapped presents at any of the designated drop-off points, and these items will be collected and sent to migrant workers at their worksites and dormitories. More details on their website.

7. Attend Christmas fundraising concerts

What better way to fundraise for charities than listening to iconic Christmas pieces by some of the world’s greatest composers. The Singapore Symphony Orchestra brings their annual Christmas Fundraising Concert at the Esplanade Concert Hall this Christmas.

Featuring the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and the Singapore Symphony Choruses, the concert is set to be a fantastic and joyous concert with excerpts from Vivaldi’s Winter, Locatelli’s Christmas Concerto, and Corelli’s Christmas Concerto

All proceeds from tickets purchased from Cat 1, Cat 2, and Cat 3 will be recognised as donations.
