What is manifestation? How do we use it when formulating our New Year’s resolutions? Reiki master and teacher, Komathy Ganesan-Mogan of the White Lotus Gallery explains

It’s January 2024, and if you haven’t already pinned down your New Year’s resolutions, you (like me) might be casting about for items to add to your list that you aren’t quite certain you’re going to stick to. With the flurry of buzzwords like “manifestation” and “abundance” adding to the task, it raises more questions than it gives answers.

Reiki is an energy healing modality that was founded in Japan in the early 1900s. The Japanese terms “Rei” and “Ki” translate directly as “Universal” and “Life-Energy” respectively. Komathy describes reiki as an ancient technology for fine-tuning the physical and etheric bodies to a high vibratory level. This enables one to channel universal life force via their palms for personal healing, healing of others, and situations too. The reiki practice is passed down through a lineage of masters via a unique attunement process that allows practitioners to channel a large flow of reiki life force.

Komathy has 28 years of experience as a reiki practitioner and is also trained in Neuro-Linguistic Programming and hypnotherapy. Working with reiki all these years, Komathy says, has brought immense transformation to her life and heightened her spiritual connection, allowing her to learn what it means to become one with a universal life force. “reiki practitioners are trained to use Intention for healing purposes, whether for ourselves and others. Intentions are a primary pillar in the practice of reiki,” says Komathy.

In reiki we believe that energy follows thought; and intention is a thought stemming from the mind. Our Intention is very carefully worded as words emit frequency. We are the masters of our reality.

“Manifestation is the act of bringing into reality the intentions that you have set for yourself or others. Intentions come first, and it is a highly creative process,” says Komathy. An affirmation, on the other hand, is a positive and empowering statement used as part of the language and diction of your intention. Komathy gives us some affirmations that she likes to use: “Peace begins with me”, “I choose to be happy today”, and “I attract only healthy relationships”.

These look very different from the “Take 10,000 steps daily” types of resolutions we are used to seeing. This is because intention-setting is a very different creature from goal-setting. “Intention is a guiding principle for how you want to show up for yourself and your life. It is rooted in the present. The outcome is long-term transformation that is aligned to core value systems. This is the foundation for manifesting. It is the direct communication to your subconscious”. Goals, on the other hand, tend to be externally driven and focused on short-term, tangible items that are based on deadlines and expectations. This brings a win-lose energy into our resolutions and frames all potential outcomes as either a success or failure.

Intentions, in contrast, lay out mindfully selected principles to encompass total mind, body and spirit wellness.

In this way, intentions naturally pave the road to abundance—this is the felt sense of being aligned, happy and satisfied with everything in your life, and it is grounded in gratitude. But the most important part of the intention-setting process is something Komathy likes to call “ground zero”. This is the empty state of mind and being that allows us to find true clarity, a blank canvas, if you will. The process of manifesting your intentions is one of deep creativity, and all art begins with a blank canvas.

The human mind operates either from a space of its past memories or from inspiration for the future. The space of inspiration is the divine place from which we will be able to successfully manifest our desires. “There needs to be a good, loving relationship between you and your intention. To believe that you are deserving and that you are a capable recipient of that intention,” Komathy says.

If you have written an intention and you feel fear, doubt, shame, guilt or any negative or unpleasant reaction, stop and reflect. “Where are these blocks coming from? Defeating statements are hidden programs within the subconscious—words or statements that have been used on you in the past. These constantly sabotage us from achieving what we truly want. Your mind and emotions need to be aligned to manifest successfully,” says Komathy. “Reiki practitioners will first release all the toxic thoughts and defeatist ideology to make space for more divine energy—bliss, love, joy, consciousness, where they can come to a state being aligned to themselves,” and we can all practise this too, Komathy says.

Abundance is a state of being. The way you feel, more than anything else, is a state which attracts more and more to you whether it be health, wealth, love, prosperity, or beautiful things. All good things grow and expand from this state of being,

“You have to really know yourself, this is why the first step is to centre and ground yourself to attain clarity.” When feeling disrupted, disconnected or ungrounded, Komathy suggests activities like yoga, running, meditation, and breathing exercises—any activity that allows you to find some peace and come back to yourself – only then revisit the intentions you are creating. “Allow yourself to come to this zero state of clarity and peace, and from there, be very clear about the kind of difference you want to see in your life. It is a beautiful gift of healing you can give to yourself,” Komathy says. It comes from within you as a gift of self-belief, pure potentiality and transformation.

To reach a certain state that we want to manifest, we must be willing to dissolve the old and bring in something new to realise our Intentions. “Allow the universe to take over and take care of you. Keep a journal of all the small things that are slowly bringing you closer to your Intentions. Good things that you never imagined may enter as you clear space for more good in your life.”
