A toy dog that's easy to carry around (or cuddle with on your lap), shih tzus are the most popular breed in the country. Step into any dog-friendly mall and you'll likely see plenty of them strolling around the greens or being pushed around in strollers. Interestingly, the shih tzu has a very regal upbringing, having once been the palace favourite of emperors in China. Their lion-like faces are neither fierce nor intimidating, and in fact, these fluffy furballs are very affectionate and intelligent.

2. Pug

Pugs have a very distinctive face, and this unique feature is a definite part of their charisma. They are a very playful breed and have a short, glossy coat that's easy to maintain. Much like the shih tzu, they also come from China and are a popular toy breed in the country. One of the most well-known pug families is the Robredo family, who cares for an adorable pug called Rocco Pacquito. Like the rest of the ladies in the family, this pug is an active campaigner for his fur mum!

3. Poodle

Quick-thinking and active, poodles are another popular dog breed in the country. Because of their versatility in size, they can be found in many different types of homes: from apartments to townhouses and mansions. Toy poodles are a great choice for novice pet owners as they adapt to their surroundings quickly and usually weigh less than five kilogrammes. Meanwhile, standard poodles can often be seen in posh villages stretching their long legs on sunny days out. The Teo family are huge fans of such and even have a kennel!

Another regal dog to add to the list is the friendly—though sometimes noisy—Pomeranian. These toy dogs come in multiple colours: everything from brown, black, cream, white, and tan. They love attention, are very smart, and are also incredibly affectionate, making them a huge hit with even Hollywood elite such as Paris Hilton and Gwen Stefani. Fortunately, though, they're also among the more affordable dog breeds in the Philippines, making them popular for families. Because of their size, they only require 30 minutes of exercise a day, making them a good choice for city or apartment living.

Those looking to adopt a retriever can check out Hound Haven, a charitable organisation that connects prospective pet parents with retired K-9s such as (retrievers and German shepherds) looking for love.
