As artificial intelligence (AI) enters classrooms across Malaysia, schools and universities are rethinking how students learn and teachers teach for a rapidly evolving future
For many parents, the idea of artificial intelligence in the classroom still feels abstract, even unsettling. Will it replace teachers, shortcut learning or widen inequalities? In Malaysia, however, the conversation has moved beyond speculation. AI is no longer a distant concept but an active force reshaping how children learn, how teachers teach and how the nation prepares for an increasingly digital future.
At the heart of this shift is a clear national ambition. With the launch of the National Education Plan 2026 to 2035 in January, Malaysia is deepening its commitment to embedding artificial intelligence, STEM education and digital literacy across the entire system, from primary schools to universities and technical institutions.

Building on earlier frameworks such as the National Artificial Intelligence Roadmap, the new plan also places emphasis on holistic student development, multilingual proficiency and a return to centralised assessments. The aim is not simply to digitise classrooms, but to cultivate a generation that is technologically fluent, adaptable in thinking and prepared for the demands of the AI-driven fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0).
For students, potential benefits include learning that adapts to them. AI-powered platforms can track progress in real time, identify gaps in understanding, tailor content accordingly and assist in overcoming language barriers.
An example of this approach is Sekolah Anak Malaysia (launched by LeapEd Services and PayNet in 2022), a homegrown digital school that blends online and in-person learning. It was initiated in response to LeapEd’s Post-COVID Recovery Research Study. With 80 per cent of lessons delivered virtually and the remainder through structured physical sessions, the model offers both flexibility and routine. Its use of AI allows educators to monitor student performance closely while freeing up time to focus on engagement rather than administration.
Such models demonstrate expanded access. By reducing dependence on physical infrastructure, digital schools can reach students in rural or underserved areas, narrowing long-standing educational gaps.

Beyond schools, AI is also transforming higher education. In a significant nationwide move, all 20 public universities in Malaysia have introduced Google’s Gemini for Education tools into their academic environments in 2026. This rollout gives nearly 600,000 students and tens of thousands of lecturers access to advanced AI capabilities, integrated directly into their existing digital platforms.
Students may use AI to summarise lecture notes, generate study guides and convert written materials into audio formats (raising accessibility). In research settings, used wisely, tools such as Deep Research act as intelligent assistants, helping users gather and analyse information more efficiently. For many undergraduates, particularly those navigating complex academic texts for the first time, this can make a tangible difference in both confidence and comprehension.

Several universities have already begun experimenting with these tools in meaningful ways. Engineering students at Universiti Malaysia Perlis, for instance, are supported by customised AI assistants designed for working on integrated circuits design and microelectromechanical systems courses. At Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, communications students are using AI to analyse social media trends and better understand digital communication. Meanwhile, research at Universiti Putra Malaysia suggests that such tools can increase student engagement, particularly in tasks like literature reviews that often feel daunting.

For educators, the transition is equally significant. Training and certification programmes are being rolled out to ensure that lecturers are not only familiar with AI tools but able to integrate them effectively into their teaching. At Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, over 500 lecturers have already undergone training, with many achieving certification as AI-enabled educators. This emphasis on teacher readiness is critical. Technology alone cannot transform education without the confidence and competence of those delivering it.
Technical and vocational education (TVET) is also evolving in parallel. As industries adopt automation, robotics and data analytics, training institutions are updating their curricula to reflect these changes. Students are now earning micro-credentials in high-demand digital fields, equipping them with practical skills that align closely with the needs of employers. The Thirteenth Malaysia Plan (2026-2030) reinforces this direction, encouraging collaboration between public institutions and private industry to keep digital skills and training relevant and responsive.

This focus on employability reflects a broader concern about the future of work. As Sultan Nazrin Shah of Perak recently emphasised, improving the quality of education is essential if Malaysia is to build a resilient and competitive labour force. He has called for the adoption of generative AI tools at all levels, noting that the country’s ability to adapt to global challenges will depend heavily on the skills of its people. He is not alone in his views.
The Sultan’s remarks also touch on a deeper issue. Education reform is not just about keeping pace with technology, but about addressing structural challenges such as brain drain and skills mismatches. By modernising its education system, Malaysia hopes not only to retain talent but to create opportunities that attract it.

And yet, the rise of AI in education is not without its concerns. Parents worry about overreliance on technology, data privacy and the erosion of fundamental skills such as critical thinking and writing. These are valid questions, and they underscore the importance of balance. AI should be seen as a tool to enhance learning, not replace the human elements that remain central to education.

Encouragingly, many of the initiatives underway in Malaysia recognise this. Features such as guided learning and structured problem solving are designed to support, rather than shortcut, the learning process. The goal is not to provide answers instantly, but to help students understand how to arrive at them.
For families, the shift towards AI-enabled education presents both opportunities and responsibilities. Parents may find themselves navigating unfamiliar territory, where homework involves digital platforms and study tools powered by algorithms. Yet it also offers a chance to engage more deeply with how children learn, and to support them in developing not just knowledge, but digital literacy and discernment.

Looking ahead, Malaysia’s position appears strong. With a growing edtech sector, supportive government policies and a diverse talent pool, the country is well placed to become a regional leader in AI-powered education. The global market for education technology is expected to expand significantly in the coming years, and those who can combine innovation with accessibility will likely set the pace.
In the end, the question is not whether AI belongs in the classroom. In Malaysia, that question has already been answered. The more important question is how it will be used, and whether it can help nurture a generation that is not only technologically capable, but thoughtful, curious and equipped to navigate a rapidly changing world.
