Tatler House Dialogue: The future of healthcare with AI

Held in partnership with Lenovo Singapore, the panel discussion delved into the diverse and practical uses of AI in the healthcare sector

On September 18, we hosted a Tatler House Dialogue session that brought together influential tech founders and leaders to discuss the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. The event, powered by Lenovo, was a platform for thought leaders to explore how AI is reshaping the industry, and what the future holds for healthcare delivery.

Moderated by Tatler Singapore’s Gen.T regional senior editor Chong Seow Wei, the panel discussion featured insights from notable speakers, including Theodoric Chew, co-founder and chief executive officer of Intellect; Harjit Gill, chief executive officer of APACMed; and Nigel Lee, country general manager of Lenovo Singapore. They highlighted significant areas within healthcare where AI is being adopted, particularly in diagnostics and patient care management. “The use of machine learning in big data is the crux of all of this. When I look at healthcare and what we are busy with, I would say a key area is the use of AI in supporting clinical decisions,” Gill shared.

AI’s impact on care delivery was a focal point of the discussion. Chew elaborated on how AI technologies are improving operational efficiency within healthcare organisations, leading to better patient outcomes. For instance, predictive analytics can help anticipate patient needs, thereby streamlining resource allocation and enhancing overall care quality. The panellists agreed that AI applications such as chatbots for patient interaction and advanced algorithms for diagnosing diseases were pivotal innovations that enhanced both efficiency and accuracy in healthcare services.

Lee gave his thoughts on misguided notions surrounding the rise of AI across all sectors, and fears over it replacing manpower and human responsibilities: “AI is nothing new, it has always been around. There is a fear that AI will take over your job, but that’s simply not true,” Lee explains. “Adopting AI only improves your job efficiency by assisting you, the human component will always be crucial.”

Despite the promising advancements, the panel acknowledged several challenges hindering broader AI adoption in healthcare. Key barriers include regulatory hurdles, data privacy concerns, and the need for robust infrastructure. These challenges necessitate collaboration among healthcare organisations, technology companies, and regulatory bodies to create a conducive environment for innovation.

The session concluded with a Q&A segment, where audience members took the chance to pick the tech founders’ brains on building the future of healthcare in tandem with AI.
