Influential women from across Asia gathered in Singapore for an event on purpose-driven leadership, inclusivity and sustainable design to mark the Asia-Pacific launch of Christine Liu’s sHero, a platform dedicated to advancing women

Visionary women leaders, innovators and changemakers from across Asia came together at the CTH Group offices in Singapore for the SHero Asia-Pacific Summit in October. The event marked the launch of the Asia Pacific chapter of sHero, whose mission is to champion a future where women can drive change.

Deric Wong, emcee and moderator for the summit and CEO of DJM Consulting, which organised the event, introduced the theme, Her Design and Sustainability, which would see the programme focus on how to proactively encourage progress, from leading with purpose to pressing for greater inclusivity. Influential leaders from China, Hong Kong and further afield joined pioneering women from Singapore to share bold ideas, foster networks and drive actionable change.

A legacy of empowerment

Founded 13 years ago, sHero was established by Christine Liu, a driving force for women empowerment in China, who left behind senior leadership roles in multi-national companies to found the non-profit, which aims to support the progress of women and engage in conversations that matter to drive action and change.

“This is not just an event. It’s a platform where women leaders get together to share, learn and inspire one another,” said Liu in her opening remarks. Her vision is not only to empower women and build a supportive network but to create a world where women not only participate but shape the industries that they are part of.

Liu invited sHero advisory board member Andy Bentote, regional managing director at PageGroup, to the stage, where he highlighted the importance of empowerment, but also shared some statistics from recent research carried out by Michael Page Singapore, which revealed that 70 per cent of respondents believe their workplace is not inclusive, highlighting how far there still is to go.

The first session of the day was led by Charlene Ree, CEO of EternityX, an AI marketing platform connecting global conglomerates to Chinese audiences. She explored strategies for connecting with female demographics and highlighted the latest trends—which include a growing interest from women in health and wellness, balancing career and individuality, and embracing minimalism and sustainability—as well as sharing her own journey balancing her multiple roles as a founder, influencer and mother of three. She closed her speech by stressing how women leaders have a responsibility to lift each other up. “Let’s be a shero for each other,” she said.

Moderator Deric Wong then led a fireside chat with Cheryl Goh, the founding chief marketing officer of Grab and the sixteenth employee after the company was founded by Anthony Tan in 2012. Currently group VP of marketing and sustainability, Goh captivated attendees with her story of helping build the company from the ground up, highlighting Grab’s strides in empowering women drivers, particularly through the use of female-centric technology-driven safety features and community-building initiatives. Goh’s stories demonstrated how real change comes from understanding specific cultural contexts and continuously refining solutions to meet diverse needs. This commitment to inclusivity and representation is core to Grab’s mission, setting an example of tech-driven solutions that support women.
