How has being the world’s first armless pilot shaped the way you approach aviation systems?

It required me to look beyond personal adaptation and focus on how systems themselves can evolve. I’ve worked with instructors and aviation bodies to ensure that any adjustments—whether in training or cockpit procedures—are structured, measurable, and aligned with safety standards. The aim is not to create exceptions, but to expand the system’s capacity to accommodate different methods of control.

What specific changes have you introduced or advocated for in pilot training?

Much of it centres on redefining how competency is assessed. For example, I’ve helped incorporate alternative control techniques using feet, as well as adjustments in cockpit ergonomics. Training modules can be adapted to focus on outcomes—precision, response time, situational awareness—rather than prescribing a single way to achieve them. That shift makes the system both more inclusive and more robust.

Your work often intersects with safety and regulation. How do you navigate that space?

Aviation is built on consistency and risk mitigation, so any change has to be carefully validated. I approach it collaboratively, working within existing frameworks while demonstrating, through testing and documentation, that alternative methods can meet the same benchmarks. It’s a gradual process, but one that ensures credibility and long-term adoption.

Was there a moment that shifted your thinking from personal achievement to systems-level impact?

Early in my training, I realised that every challenge I encountered—whether it was control access or emergency procedures—was tied to how the system was designed. That shifted my focus. Instead of asking how I could adapt indefinitely, I began asking how the system itself could evolve to better account for variation.

How do you define leadership in a field as structured as aviation?

Leadership, in this context, is about accountability to systems. It means recognising where processes can be improved and taking responsibility for advancing those changes in a way that maintains safety and integrity. It’s less about visibility and more about influence—how you shape standards that others will operate within.

What broader lessons can other industries take from your work?

That adaptability should be built into systems from the outset. When you design with only one type of user in mind, you create fragility. When you design for variation, you create resilience. That principle applies well beyond aviation—it’s relevant to any field concerned with performance, safety, and long-term sustainability.
