From award-winning actor Lee Jung Jae to Nobel Peace Prize nominee Amanda Nguyen, Tatler Ball Asia honoured a class of trailblazers whose influence is reshaping global culture, human rights and environmental stewardship

The true measure of any elite gathering is the calibre of its honourees, and the recent Tatler Ball Asia in Singapore delivered spectacularly by celebrating a class of recipients whose achievements span Mount Everest, the US Congress, and the furthest reaches of the ocean.

Held during the electric Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix weekend, this powerful convergence of 300 industry titans and cultural pioneers served a singular purpose: to shine a vital light on the extraordinary individuals receiving the coveted Chaplin and Impact Awards. From Emmy-winning actor Lee Jung Jae to record-breaking climber Lhakpa Sherpa, this is the story of the trailblazers shaping our global narrative.

The biggest moment of the gala was the Tatler Impact Awards ceremony that included the coveted Chaplin Award. The awards spotlight individuals whose work leaves an indelible mark on culture, science and the human spirit.

Let’s take a look at this year’s esteemed recipients.

Actor and director Lee Jung Jae received the Chaplin Award for his impact on global entertainment. Lee has transcended borders, proving the universal power of Asian talent by becoming the first non-English actor to win the 74th Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his iconic role in Squid Game. With a celebrated directorial debut in Hunt, which earned invitations to the 75th Cannes Film Festival and the 27th Toronto International Film Festival, and his recent casting as a Jedi master in the Star Wars franchise, Lee represents the very peak of versatile global prowess.

Receiving the Chaplin Award makes me even more nervous and I certainly feel the weight of this award—even compared to receiving the Emmy Award. It’s a strange mixture of feelings because Mr Chaplin is someone I have deep respect for and deeply love. He was an amazing artist and fellow filmmaker. Having received this award in Singapore is such a meaningful occasion for me

Humanity Award: Amanda Nguyen

Civil rights activist and astronaut Amanda Nguyen was honoured with the Tatler Impact Award for Humanity, a testament to her pioneering work in advancing human rights and justice. A graduate of Harvard and a fellow at MIT, Nguyen made history as the first Vietnamese and Southeast Asian woman in space, where her bioastronautics research focuses on women’s health. Yet, it is her relentless activism—which led to her nomination for a Nobel Peace Prize and recognition as Time Woman of the Year for successfully drafting and passing sexual assault survivor rights in the US and the UN—that truly defines her extraordinary purpose.

Fifty years ago, the Vietnam War ended. And when my family looked at the sky, they saw bombs. But earlier this year, when my family looked to the sky, they saw the first Vietnamese woman in space

Sports Award: Lhakpa Sherpa

Mountaineer Lhakpa Sherpa took home the Tatler Impact Award for Sports, celebrating a journey defined by inspiring resilience. Sherpa holds the record for the most successful ascents of Mount Everest by a woman, having summited the peak ten times. Her feat as the first Nepali woman to survive climbing and descending Everest has shattered records and inspired countless women globally—a powerful narrative captured in the 2023 Netflix documentary, Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa. She also founded Hiking with Lhakpa, where she organises and leads hikes in the US and the Himalayas.

I love hiking and would love to share my experience through guides. Never give up. Keep going up. Life is difficult but keep going up and you’ll climb any mountain

Global Impact Award: Ray and Mark Dalio

Tatler Asia

The Global Impact Award was conferred upon investor-philanthropists Ray and Mark Dalio of OceanX. Ray Dalio, who founded Bridgewater in 1975 and built it into a global financial institution over 47 years, now focuses his considerable influence on mentorship and philanthropy.

This legacy is now spectacularly advanced by his son, Mark Dalio, founder and co-CEO of OceanX. Mark spearheads the organisation’s strategic vision, leading groundbreaking marine exploration, science, education, and filmmaking, which includes his executive producer role on the recent National Geographic documentary series OceanXplorers. Their shared commitment positions OceanX as a vital force in environmental stewardship.

Being able to educate and inspire the next generation to be the future of explorers and future scientists is a huge importance. Therefore, we place immense importance and work towards the education as well as the data we collect … to care and conserve the world’s oceans

The evening, curated with an exquisite multi-course menu and world-class performances, was ultimately a testament to the power of collective influence.
