Kris Dayanti talks music, family, politics, sports, and how three simple words became the center of her universe

Interestingly, some of the material on this EP isn't actually new. Three English-language songs— "Breathless," "On The Way Up ," and " Never Gonna Let You Go "—were recorded in Los Angeles in 2019, just before the pandemic changed the rhythm of the global music industry. "At the time, I was working in parliament. My focus completely shifted," he said. "It didn't feel right to release a project like this right away."

Instead of remaining in the archives, these songs are now reborn through a remastering and remixing process with Dolby Atmos technology, providing an even more immersive audio dimension.

A new language for a new generation

While the public knows Kris Dayanti for grand ballads like "Mencintaimu" or " Try to Be Faithful ," "Love, Krisdayanti" offers something different. It features contemporary pop nuances, more streamlined production, and a visual approach far removed from the glamorous vibe typical of Indonesian divas of the 2000s.

"The concept is more personal, like an open letter," she explained. The EP's title emerged from discussions with her sister and the creative team, bringing a younger generation's perspective. Kris Dayanti admitted that she learned a lot from the way millennials and Gen Z define intimacy—more concise, more direct, but still retaining emotional intensity.

"Young people today may not always express things the way my generation did. But they have a different depth of thought." This is reflected in her music video. Instead of making herself the visual center, as is typical for a diva, Krisdayanti appears only for a few seconds. "No flexing," she said with a laugh. "I wanted the narrative to be more relatable."

This choice was no accident. In a music distribution landscape now heavily influenced by short-form content on TikTok and digital algorithms, he understands that relevance demands a new language. However, for him, adaptation doesn't mean lowering standards. "We may keep up with the times, but quality must remain intact."

Therefore, the EP's production still involved live musicians, organic orchestrations, and longtime collaborators who had built his iconic works. For one track, he even re-teamed with the orchestra members who were previously involved in Mencintaimu. "The people are still the same. It's just the fee that's different now," he joked.

The price of relevance

In an era when songs can be recorded in a bedroom and go viral overnight, Kris Dayanti speaks openly about the financial realities behind producing quality music. "Making a project like this isn't cheap," she said. She mentioned that the EP's production cost reached hundreds of millions of rupiah, not including promotion and distribution costs.

As an independent musician with his own label, Raya Music, the biggest challenge is no longer just creating music, but ensuring it finds an audience. "We're competing with a generation that is very digitally native. They have a different way of promoting themselves."

But she refuses to view these changes as a threat. "It doesn't mean musicality is declining. Tastes are just evolving." What she's looking for is common ground: how to maintain Kris Dayanti's character as an Indonesian diva without sounding trapped in nostalgia.

The meaning of love is getting wider

If there is one common thread that is always present in Kris Dayanti's musical journey, it is love. But the definition of love for him today is much broader than romance. “Now I see love from many layers,” he said. “As a wife, mother, grandmother, friend, daughter, sister.”

The experience of playing various roles made him understand love as a daily practice: telling someone when they arrive safely, answering the phone from their parents, or simply saying I love you without a big reason.

"Those three words are simple, but they can change someone's mood." For him, expressing affection is also part of mental health. He highlighted how the culture of social comparison reinforced by digital media often leaves many people feeling inadequate.

“Sometimes we are so busy comparing ourselves that we forget to appreciate what we already have.” This is where Love, Kris Dayanti finds its meaning: a reminder that compassion, for others and for ourselves, remains relevant in an increasingly fast-paced world.

Discipline of an athlete

Outside of music, Kris Dayanti's most interesting transformation in recent years may have come from an entirely different realm: wushu. Since 2021, she has been training seriously and has competed in various competitions in the veteran category.

To many, this might seem like a side hustle. But for Kris Dayanti, wushu is a lifelong practice. "The training is monotonous. The same movements, over and over again, for just one or two minutes."

He wakes up at five in the morning, prays, and then trains. He follows this routine with almost ascetic consistency. "People only see the results during competitions. They don't see the process of waking up at dawn every day."

Wushu, he said, taught him mindfulness in its most concrete form. “The movements have to be precise, but also fluid.” He was drawn to the aesthetic aspect of this traditional Chinese martial art—powerful yet beautiful movements.

Behind her motivation lies a personal one: the experience of seeing her mother suffer a stroke at a relatively young age. "It opened my eyes. We have to move." For her, exercise is no longer about appearance, but rather an investment in maintaining independence in old age. "One of my daily prayers is to be kept away from laziness in old age."

Ambition that changes shape

After a career spanning over 30 years, the question of ambition becomes intriguing. Is he still pursuing artistic validation? Or does he now prefer domestic tranquility? The answer isn't clear-cut.

“The ambition remains,” he said. “But its form has changed.”

While her ambition once was to reach a bigger stage, now her ambitions are more subtle: maintaining quality of life, consistency, and a legacy. She admits that the most complex achievements come not from the stage or medals, but from home. "The roles of wife and mother are far more challenging than being an artist or athlete."

With a large family spanning various life stages, she understands that maintaining emotional balance requires far more energy than performing on stage. "Taking care of everyone's feelings is a 24-hour job."

There's maturity in the way Kris Dayanti talks about relationships. She's neither overly romantic nor cynical, but realistic. She understands that family harmony is something to be continually worked for, not a permanent state.

Indonesia and the chosen optimism

As a figure who has also been directly involved in politics, Kris Dayanti also views art within a national context. She believes music plays a strategic role in strengthening Indonesian identity amidst global cultural competition. "Our market is huge. Our potential is enormous."

He spoke about mutual cooperation, cultural richness, and the importance of collective optimism. While acknowledging various structural challenges, he chose to see Indonesia as a land of abundant possibilities. "We must not lose faith in our own country."

This view feels consistent with the entire narrative of his life: that discipline, hard work, and gratitude remain the foundation.

At the end of the conversation, I asked him: if he could write a letter to his younger self, what would he say? He paused, then smiled. “I would say: I love you.”

Not advice on career, fame, or life strategies. Just three simple words.

Perhaps it's because in the end, after all the stages, awards, family dynamics, athletic disciplines, and personal transformations, Kris Dayanti came to one fundamental conclusion: that love—in its simplest form—remains the driving force behind everything.

And at an age when many icons choose to cling to past glories, Kris Dayanti demonstrates something even more compelling: the courage to continue evolving. Not by abandoning who she is, but by rewriting its definition.

With Love, Kris Dayanti, she's not trying to be relevant. Kris Dayanti is proving that true relevance comes from a willingness to continually grow.
