拿起相機,在世界各地的海洋、荒地等地冒險,成為勞力士代言人的保育攝影師Cristina Mittermeier透過她的鏡頭保留下自然界裡一個個觸動人心的瞬間;她傳達了對地球的熱愛,也希望喚醒大眾對環境保護的意識、一同投入行動。

保育攝影師Cristina Mittermeier在2005成立國際保育攝影師聯盟(International Leage of Conservation Photographer)集結眾多攝影師的力量,透過他們鏡頭底下的故事喚醒大眾對於保育議題的重視;接下來,她在2014年成立SeaLegacy,截至目前已經完成超過45次的冒險旅程,用700萬張的相片記錄下多達765個物種在地球上生活的痕跡⋯⋯在她的照片之中,總是能見到美麗的自然風景以及活躍的生命力,讓人再一次愛上這顆星球。

在2021年開始,Mittermeier加入了勞力士代言人的行列,並在勞力士推行的「保護地球,恒動不息」計畫支持下,持續她的壯闊旅途。透過勞力士的邀請,Mittermeier接受了包含Tatler GMT在內的數家亞洲媒體的聯合訪問,分享20多年來的經驗。

發現鏡頭的力量

雖然在求學期間,她的故鄉墨西哥並沒有海洋生物相關的學校與科系,但基於對海洋的嚮往,Mittermeier仍選擇進入漁業生物學科系就讀。然而,她所面對的卻是殘酷的現實——「當我以觀察員的身份登上一艘捕蝦船,親眼目睹整個操作過程。」她回憶:「當他們把漁網拉上來時,我看到網子裡有很多死去的動物⋯⋯珊瑚、海綿、海星、魟魚,甚至還有一隻死亡的海龜。為了補撈到一磅的蝦,竟然得犧牲十磅的其他海洋生物⋯⋯」於是她陷入了思考:如果我們持續這樣對待海洋,最後還能留給子孫們什麼?

Mittermeier意識到此情此景絕對不會是她所希望的未來,她轉身投入了海洋科學研究,希望用科學論證的方式去說服大眾停止傷害海洋;但是,「只有少數人會閱讀這些研究,媒體對此也不感興趣,大眾也很難以理解論文的專業術語,我們做了成千上萬份科學報告,但從來沒有被人真正看見。」

沮喪的Mittermeier苦思,要用什麼方式才能夠真正的集結大眾的力量?此時她在墨西哥城邂逅了一位攝影師。起初,Mittermeier只是以翻譯的角色去協助攝影師完成一本精裝攝影書;但在發表會上她見到大眾聚精會神的看著照片,並踴躍提問,「那一刻我突然明白,也許科學對大多數人來說太過艱澀,但攝影卻是任何人都能輕鬆理解的媒介。」Mittermeier下定決心拿起相機,幾乎從零開始學習拍攝,一路拍了幾十年的時間。

找回對大自然的憧憬

Miettermeier與夥伴們達成了許多成就。在2016年,他們透過影像紀錄加州沿海使用「漂網」捕撈劍魚時造成其他眾多海洋生物喪命的情況,並向公眾揭露,成功在兩個星期之內收集到15萬名加州公民的連署請願,聯合當地參議員通過了禁止漂網的法案。在2019到2020年期間, SeaLegacy也收到哥斯大黎加、巴拿馬、哥倫比亞以及厄瓜多四國政府的邀請,進行多次探險活動,將拍攝到的影像紀錄以展覽的形式向大眾展示這片龐大海域的美麗,幫助這四個國家順利在海域上建立生態廊道,保護遷徙路途中的海洋生物不被漁船捕撈。

但身為一名攝影師,Mittermeier最享受的還是拍攝的過程,「當你專注於某個主題拍攝時,偶爾一切都會完美契合,那一刻你知道自己拍到了腦海中想像的那個畫面!」她也愛著人們欣賞這些照片時的表情,「我特別喜歡那種充滿驚奇與敬畏的眼神,因為我相信,當我們還是孩子的時候,天生就擁有對大自然的好奇與驚嘆。」透過Mittermeier的分享,許多人找回了自己對大自然的憧憬與尊敬,讓他們也願意為保護這顆美麗星球而動作。

The abundance of sharks in these waters has contributed to the thriving tourism industry in the country, giving skeptical visitors the opportunity to interact with these misunderstood creatures. These lemon and reef sharks have learned not to fear humans. Congregating in large numbers around the boats, they stir up a frenzy, oblivious to the people admiring them from above and below.

以夢想與信念為方向

在海洋與原野上探索冒險,本就處處充滿著未知的險境。在2024年,Mittermeier前往澳洲,在當地政府的許可下拍攝南露脊鯨。「一隻母鯨帶著他的寶寶過來,寶寶游得離我太近,母鯨顯然很不高興,牠突然甩動尾巴朝我打過來,我本能的縮了一下、尾巴就從我頭頂上劃過!」

除了自然的險境,對群眾的溝通也帶來許多壓力。曾經在2017年,Mittermeier拍攝到北極熊因為海洋浮冰融化導致無法出海覓食,長期挨餓下只得進入人類城鎮翻找垃圾桶中的食物充飢。北極熊虛弱到幾乎無法走動的畫面帶著強大衝擊,被《Times》雜誌選為該年度10大圖片之一,被超過25億人瀏覽觀看;但同時也引發許多否認氣候變遷的人質疑她刻意造假。

「那是一段痛苦的經歷,但我不會改變任何事情,因為在那一刻,我們確實讓全世界都停下來、思考氣候變遷帶來的影響。」承受著許多誤解,但Mittermeier始終對自己所做的事情堅定不移。她形容那份信念就像是在海上航行時為船員們指路的北極星,引導她不斷前行。

「這是一個非常艱難的行業,」Mittermeier說:「你必須要對大自然充滿熱情、還有無限的樂觀。」她說,黑人解放運動先驅馬丁・路德・金恩曾說過:「我有一個夢想(I have a dream)」,那個夢並不是惡夢、而是一份對美好未來的期許,「而我的夢想就是人類可以生活在一個充滿美麗野生動物和生機盎然海洋的星球上!」

同舟共濟

Mittermeier坦言,資金的募集始終是最大的挑戰。因此,能夠成為勞力士的代言人、接受「保護地球,恒動不息」的資金幫助,她認為自己十分幸運,除了可以有些資金持續實踐理念,也能透過勞力士的協助,接觸更多發聲管道。

儘管有仍有許多未竟之志,但她說:「世界上還有成千上萬的人正在努力提出解決方案,恢復生態系統、倡導保護、進行募款——有無數關心地球的人,所以我並不孤單。」像是,各國正在努力增加設置於經濟海域(exclusive economic zone)的保護區面積,巴拿馬的保護區已佔據該國經濟海域的50%、帛琉更達到了90%;而她的祖國墨西哥,則在今年度增加7%,「這些進展讓我充滿希望,我看到許多人已經覺醒並付出行動,這讓我對未來更加樂觀。」

自稱現在有三分之一的時間待在家裡處理攝影作品、三分之一搭乘SeaLegacy外出探險拍攝,剩下的時間則到處旅行發表演講。生活十分充實的Mittermeier在這場訪問過後又將前往非洲大陸,從海洋轉往陸地拍攝大象、獅子、長頸鹿這些頻危動物的現狀,同時也正忙碌著與墨西哥政府討論設立海洋保護區的議題。馬不停蹄的Mittermeier懷揣著滿滿希望,為了我們與那些可愛的旅伴們,打造一個更美好、更光明的願景。
