See which schools lead the 2026 university rankings as China dominates and Japan hits a new ten-year academic peak
The Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2026 provide a look at where the continent’s academic power sits today. For anyone tracking where the next generation of tech, business and scientific talent is being trained, these results offer a practical map of the landscape. This year’s list has expanded to include 929 institutions across 36 countries, meaning there is more data than ever on schools outside the usual suspects. While mainland China continues to hold the top two positions, the latest update shows Japan hitting its highest peak in a decade and newer territories like Yemen entering the frame. These university rankings essentially act as a pulse check on which regions are successfully turning government and private investment into world-class education hubs.
The evaluation criteria
The 2026 university rankings use 18 different metrics across five specific categories. Research quality is the heaviest hitter, making up 30 per cent of the total score by looking at how often a school’s work is cited by others globally. Teaching and the research environment—essentially the culture and prestige of the campus and its faculty—each count for about 30 per cent. The final 10 per cent comes from industry income (how much a school helps businesses) and international outlook (how many global students and staff are on site). It is a framework designed to show which schools are actually producing results, rather than just relying on an old name.
