The late Queen Elizabeth II spoke fondly of her memories in Malaysia, which she visited three times since 1972

Queen Elizabeth II’s first visit to Malaysia was in February 1972 as part of an eight-country royal tour of Asia together with her husband Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and their daughter, Princess Anne. She was the first British monarch to visit Malaysia.
Arriving at Port Klang onboard the Royal Yacht Britannia, Britain's longest reigning monarch visited Sarawak, Melaka, Kuala Lumpur and more. Queen Elizabeth began the second day of her visit by laying a wreath at the National Monument in Kuala Lumpur, later walking through the city to greet locals and bystanders with Prince Philip. She also visited Parliament building with then Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak for a state banquet in her honour.

In 1989, Queen Elizabeth made her second trip to Malaysia on a four-day visit to open the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting on October 18, 1989. Together with Prince Philip, she attended a state banquet at Istana Iskandariah, the royal palace of the Perak Sultanate in Kuala Kangsar, Perak. It was also on this trip that she visited the famous Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque, on October 14, 1989, donning a gold and blue silk robe with matching shoes while touring the mosque.

On September 20 – 23, 1998, Queen Elizabeth II made her third visit to Malaysia for the for the official closing of the XVI Commonwealth Games, the first time the Games was hosted in Asia. On this trip, she famously rode the LRT train to the Commonwealth Games.
Together with then Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Ja'afar, she walked the red carpet at Bukit Jalil National Stadium inspecting the officers of the Royal Malay Regiment. In Kuala Lumpur, the Queen visited St. Mary’s Cathedral, the Petronas Twin Towers and more iconic spots. She also met with then Malaysian prime minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, amidst demonstrations and rising political tensions in the country.
