It's time to invest in our planet—head over to Dusun by OpenHouse in Bangsar Shopping Centre this Sunday to check out these sustainable Malaysian brands

Tatler Malaysia will be hosting its first sustainability weekend, in partnership with Acer, at Dusun from October 1-2. As a tech company, Acer has been leading the charge in sustainable practices including a commitment to 100 per cent renewable energy use by 2035 and using eco-friendly materials to build its high-performance laptops.

The first day will feature by-invite only panel discussions with industry experts and eco champions, including Jeffrey Lai, senior product manager of Acer Malaysia; Dato' Azmir Merican, group managing director of Sime Darby Property Berhad; Andrew Chan, consulting leader for PwC Malaysia; Yasmin Rashid, founder and president of EcoKnights; Stuart Thomas, founder and CEO of Babylon Vertical Farms; and Ariff Faisal, CEO of Kualesa.

The second day will be open to the public to get up close and personal with the bazaar vendors and discover more about their sustainable products. Read on to find out who they are.

1. Babylon Vertical Farms

Founded in 2016, Babylon Vertical Farms began as an urban vertical farm in Kota Damansara. It has since evolved into a provider of agricultural products and services. Cultivating fresh, hydroponic vegetables and herbs, the company also offers consultation and farm building services.

 

2. Kualesa

Founded by Ariff Faisal and Haris Kamal, Kualesa’s apparel is made with the eco-friendly bamboo lyocell. Perfect for Malaysia’s tropical climate, the bamboo apparel is 100 per cent polyester-free and durable, challenging the basic notion of fast fashion.

3. The Modest Brand

A modest athleisure label with products made with such sustainable materials as recycled cotton, nylon and polyester, The Modest Brand offers an innovative approach when it comes to comfortable clothing, bridging the gap between function and style.

4. Dasi Frères

French for ‘brothers’, Dasi Frères is a third-generation coffee roaster specialising in Grand Cru coffee with over 50 coffee references. Committed to the eco-conscious initiative, its organic coffee is certified by Ecocert for being transparent about the coffee origins and its ethical responsibility to its partners and farmers. Packaged in Nespresso-compatible capsules, Dasi Frères’ coffee is biodegradable, compostable, and aluminium-free.

5. Palmy

Specialising in beautiful handcrafted paper and textile products made from agricultural waste such as pineapple leaves, bananas, stems and even bamboo shoots, Palmy is a homegrown brand that doesn’t compromise on the ethical treatment of its local craftspeople from a close-knit village community in Johor. Above all, Palmy’s products are created to raise awareness on the land as well as the people who live on it.
