These Singapore leaders are showing their fun sides on social media... and we are here for it
In these modern times, it would be hard to deny that we aren’t spending more time on TikTok and Instagram to stay updated with current affairs and the latest trends. And it appears that our local politicians are also actively trying to engage the younger audience by using these social media platforms.
This has resulted in some of our ministers and Members of Parliament showing off their skills online by learning how to participate in viral trends, offering useful information in short-form videos and more.
Don’t miss: Can you really trust how you feel, or is it just the internet making you angrier?
As more of our politicians develop their online personalities, we highlight the ones who are slaying the social media game with their light-hearted videos, dances and, well, the occasional (and unintentional) thirst traps.
1. Lawrence Wong
Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong seems to have mastered the art of connecting with the younger generation. PM Wong launched his TikTok account in 2020 and has since been answering questions and participating in viral trends on the app.
In 2022, PM Wong surprised his viewers by posting a TikTok video of himself riding a motorcycle alongside a group of people as part of a fundraiser for the Singapore Children’s Cancer Foundation. The video was well received with many applauding the minister for stepping out of his comfort zone and doing something out of the ordinary.
2. Lee Hsien Loong
Many Singaporeans would have known by now that our Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong has always been a savvy social media user. Mr Lee loves experimenting with photography and videography, sometimes just with his trusty mobile phone camera—and the results are usually pretty impressive. We particularly enjoy his personal #jalanjalan posts that offer followers a glimpse into his daily life.
3. Sun Xueling
Minister for Social and Family Development of Singapore Sun Xueling is just like any of us, frequently sharing snippets of her life on Instagram. The Member of Parliament for Punggol West SMC also has an ongoing series called ‘Sun Xueling Reads’, where she engages with her viewers through a virtual storytelling session.
4. Tin Pei Ling
Besides local politician Tin Pei Ling's regular community-related posts, one will notice several cat photos on her Instagram page. She regularly shares updates on Tofu, Macpherson Community Centre’s very own cat, along with other friendly felines she spots around the neighbourhood.
5. Mariam Jaafar
Sembawang GRC Member of Parliament since Mariam Jaafar’s sunny disposition shines through her photos posted on her Instagram feed. On top of work snaps, she regularly shares anecdotes of her personal life, from travels with her husband to the occasional #selfie.
6. Louis Ng
Member of Parliament for Nee Soon GRC Louis Ng’s passion for animals is evident based on his Instagram feed. While you may not necessarily see adorable photos of animals, his posts mainly highlight the importance of animal welfare in Singapore.
7. Jamus Lim
Jamus Lim, a member of parliament for Sengkang GRC and the Worker’s Party, is a hot favourite on Instagram. While he is not as active posting on Instagram Reels, followers are always thrilled to see his grid posts where he shares snippets from his job, his family life and more. He seems to enjoy penning lengthy Instagram captions for his photos that help explain the work that the Worker’s Party is doing in Singapore.
Mr Lim is also active on the Worker’s Party’s official TikTok, where he can be seen doing his walkabouts and distributing merch to residents.

8. Ong Ye Kung

Health minister Ong Ye Kung joined TikTok in 2022, reportedly after some persuasion from Mr Syed Saddiq, Malaysia’s former youth and sports minister. In a video posted on Mr Syed’s account, he was seen filming Mr Ong as he created his TikTok account. He then promised to be the Singapore minister’s first follower. Since then, Mr Ong has taken to the app with fun and engaging videos that celebrate nurses, promote healthy lifestyles and more.
9. Tan Cheng Bock
Is this really a list of politicians on social media if we don't include Mr Tan Cheng Bock? The chairman of the Progress Singapore Party has been charming Singaporeans everywhere since he joined Instagram (and now TikTok, under the Progress Party’s official account).
At 82, Mr Tan is everyone’s grandpa who is slowly learning how to use the social media platform with help from his young team—whom he seems to be very fond of. Truly, there’s nothing more wholesome than seeing a video of Mr Tan trying to learn how to do a video call or patiently explaining politics to young Singaporeans.
10. Baey Yam Keng
Member of Parliament Baey Yam Keng is always busy doing his part as a politician in our country, particularly when it comes to pushing for sustainability and conservation locally. However, online, Mr Baey is often affectionately referred to as “bae” and that’s simply because he is well-known for posting low-key thirst traps on TikTok as he works out and participates in viral trends and dances—all in a very tasteful fashion, of course.
11. Indranee Rajah

As a member of the Singapore Parliament, Indranee Rajah uses her TikTok platform to inform her followers through educational videos. Her videos break down everyday Singaporean matters like GST vouchers, or she takes viewers behind the scenes of events and even shows highlights of her important speeches. Sometimes, her followers are treated to some food recommendations from her. Who doesn't love a Singaporean foodie?
