Events organiser extraordinaire Olga Iserlis pens anecdotes on style, etiquette and history that are drawn from her own eventful life experiences in her new release, Little Black Book

Olga Iserlis is not one to rest on her laurels. The prominent events planner, also the founder of luxury lifestyle events consultancy Adagio Events, is known for organising some of the most memorable and stylish society events, whether it’s high-profile fundraising galas or intimate soirées.

“I start with the vision. Once it comes to my mind, and—more importantly—to my heart and soul, I move forward,” she remarks as she settles on a large dove grey sofa in her home, bright-eyed and bristling with energy.

One would never have guessed that Iserlis had just stepped off a plane from Germany the day prior. It’s as if she has the enviable ability to will jet lag away. “I don’t think about being tired,” she says with a shrug. “I much prefer to dive right into things and keep my mind occupied.”

This determination to be hyper-engaged stimulates her passion and drive; it’s also the force behind the latest addition on her glittering resume: a new book titled Little Black Book, which is co-published with home-grown leather atelier Bynd Artisan.

It’s not Iserlis’s first rodeo in the book scene; she had previously launched Save The Date, a coffee table book that’s an ode to her journey as an events planner, in 2016. But up until early this year, she hadn’t considered writing a second book.

The source of inspiration for her new 208-page book lies in her Instagram account—or more specifically, in the process of penning her social media captions. Her anecdotes, laced with her bona fide flair, were a form of an open letter to her followers and she ensured that she bolstered her words of wisdom with carefully researched sources.

Little Black Book is based on my thoughts and emotions, arranged into three loose sections: ‘Style and Fashion’, ‘Etiquette and Manners’, and ‘History and Traditions’,” says Iserlis.

Perhaps one of the most enchanting aspects of the book, and indeed of Iserlis herself, is the authentic consistency that draws you in.

She adds: “These pages represent conversations that I have with myself on ideas that I simply find interesting or important. Moreover, it is my hope that readers might also add their own thoughts into the blank pages I have inserted into the book.”

While the book might have only taken nine months to come to fruition, every single attribute was meticulously planned—much like many of the parties that she executes.

Subtle details are presented inconspicuously: the luxe fabric hardcover offers a tactile appeal; page numbers are presented in a striking yet elegant manner to visibly signify the end of individual topics; and Iserlis’ thoughts are distinctively printed on white paper on the left side of the book, while the right features factual research in italics and on grey paper.

The events organiser is quick to credit her team for their dedication, including co-publishers Bynd Artisan. “Little Black Book is a fantastic collaboration of very talented people,” Iserlis enthuses. “The partnership with Winnie [Chan] and James [Quan] from Bynd Artisan was really natural. Their humble, professional and sincere attitude made the whole process easy and seamless. I could not imagine having a better partner than them.”

A deft depiction of the modern notions of style, etiquette and traditions, the book invites one to both learn about and reflect on oneself. Iserlis shares: “This book is not only a conversation starter with others; it’s [meant to start] a conversation with yourself as well. Question your knowledge, your likes and dislikes, and most importantly, question your own curiosity.”

Little Lessons

Here, Iserlis highlights excerpts of her top tips from each section of the book:

Style and Fashion: “It’s all about the ‘attitude’, the way we carry ourselves; how we express our personality, elegance, wit, strength; and how kindness from within is what makes us truly unique.”

Etiquette and Manners: “Be the bigger person. We can be kind and gracious without letting people run all over us. It takes self-restraint and practice, but taking the ‘high road’ is almost always the best thing to do.”

History and Traditions: “Dreaming big doesn’t only mean aiming for something better. It can also mean having the mental freedom to think about what we want out of life and forgetting the reasons why we can’t turn them into reality. It’s about looking at the bigger picture for ourselves.”
