Ms Chew Poh Yim was the founder of Stroke Support Station and gave her time to many other charitable causes

This week, Ms Chew Poh Yim, the founder of the Stroke Support Station and the wife of Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean, sadly passed away peacefully at the age of 67.

Chew is well known for her philanthropy as well as the leadership roles she held in various companies such as NTUC FairPrice as well as in the Girl’s Guide.

She also donated her time religiously to a multitude of causes but in particular, to the elderly. She was a great mentor and loved people throughout her life.

1. Chew founded the Stroke Support Station

In 2015, Chew started Stroke Support Station (S3) after she realised that there was a need for the community to get involved and to help reintegrate stroke survivors into society and ensure their well-being.

Chew was very hands-on according to the Stroke Support Station and provided counsel, guidance and encouragement to many of the volunteers over the years. 

Today, S3 programmes are supported by medical professionals and therapists from various hospitals in Singapore and they continue to do good and important work for patients of stroke and their caregivers. 

2. Chew also supported many other community programmes

Ever the giver, Chew was also involved in supporting many community programmes particularly for the elderly.

She collaborated with institutions such as the National University Health System and People’s Association in order to do this.

Chew was also on the board of trustees of SingHealth Foundation.

3. She held many roles at NTUC Fairprice

As a graduate from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, Chew held many roles professionally at NTUC Fairprice. In fact, she has had over 25 years of experience in management, marketing and branding in the consumer and retail market.

She was a general manager of NTUC FairPrice Foundation and also held roles in procurement, marketing and corporate communications. 

 

4. Chew played a major role in the Girl Guides

Between 1999 and 2007, Chew served as the Girls Guide Singapore’s 10th Council President where she played an instrumental role in shaping the Girl Guide Movement.

According to the Girl’s Guide, Teo was passionate about the development of girls and the promotion of membership and would often host interactive sessions with school principles.

She also helped the company establish good corporate governance by working closely with an external consultant to draw up a proper governance framework that got the company to begin documenting their standard operating principles and processes.

 

5. She was charitable even after her passing

Despite her passing, Chew still ensured that she was contributing to her charitable causes and arranged that all donations received as a result of her death go to S3, NUS Mind-Science Centre, Girl Guides Singapore, the NCCS Cancer Fund, and Assisi Hospice.
