From his philanthropy to his military service, here are some facts about the United Kingdom’s newest monarch you may not be aware of

King Charles III may have been known as the longest-serving heir apparent in British history while his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, ruled for 70 years, but the 74-year-old king had accomplished plenty before he ascended the throne in 2022.

From his dedication to advocating for the environment to his passion for art, here are five things you should know about him before this weekend’s coronation, which will be modernised to better reflect issues important to the king.

1. He has a history of campaigning for the environment

King Charles III has been campaigning for the environment since he was a young man, and at a time when talk of climate change or the environment was less understood and frequently ridiculed.

From having an organic garden in his private estate of Highgrove House to attending the COP26 Summit in 2021, the king has long been vocal when it comes to preserving the planet for future generations. He also founded Duchy Originals, a leading organic food and drink brand in the UK.

2. He built a village called Poundbury

King Charles’s many interests include urban planning and development. In 1993 he began building a village called Poundbury in Southwest England, based on “new urbanism” principles, which highlight sustainable modes of transportation like walking and cycling. Construction is due to be completed in 2025. Currently, Poundbury is home to around 4,600 residents.

3. His artworks are sold for charity

King Charles is an accomplished painter who has sold many of his works since 1997. All proceeds from the sale of his art pieces have gone towards the Prince of Wales Foundation, which “offers a diverse range of innovative and inspiring education and training programmes for all ages and backgrounds”.

In October last year, a print of his painting of Balmoral Castle was sold at auction for almost £5,740, almost ten times the expected price.

4. He attended the University of Cambridge

Unlike previous royal heirs who had received traditional home-schooling, the then Prince Charles was the first to earn a Bachelor’s degree. In 1967, he enrolled in Trinity College, Cambridge, and studied archaeology, anthropology, and history. He graduated in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts.

5. He underwent intensive military training

During his second year in Cambridge, King Charles requested that he attend Royal Air Force training. In March 1971, he began training as a jet pilot at the Royal Air Force College Cranwell, qualifying five months later. Then, in September 1971, he began a six-week-long naval course. In 1974, he qualified as a helicopter pilot. He served in the armed forces until 1976.
