A leader in the tech sphere, Purnima Wijendra wants us to realise why it's important that half the population is included in the discussion
Purnima Wijendra is an esteemed figure in the ever-evolving tech landscape. “My path has been paved by heartfelt passion, thoughtful career choices, and an unwavering commitment to innovation,” shares the head of AI at Mandrill Tech, a fintech outfit that delivers comprehensive technology solutions to businesses across multiple domains. She is a testament to the transformative power of technology and the invaluable contributions that women make to the world of technology.
Wijendra’s passion for tech drove her to pursue and excel in her current field. She has been fascinated with technology since childhood and transitioned from qualifying as a civil engineer to software engineering, reflecting her commitment to innovation. Her early experiences in tech, such as customising HTML templates, set the foundation for her career. Alongside her professional endeavours, she maintained a close connection with academia, delving into generative AI, machine learning, statistics, and mathematics, sharing her passion and knowledge through part-time university lectures.

Her transition to the commercial sector was not just a career move but a pursuit of realising the real-world impact of theoretical knowledge, emphasising a love for technology’s problem-solving potential. However, that’s when she noticed the gender disparity within the sector. From stereotypes discouraging young girls from pursuing STEM careers to a pervasive gender pay gap, Wijendra emphasises the need for systemic change to create truly inclusive spaces.
Her deep conviction in the transformative power of women in tech led her to assert that their inclusion is not just essential but a cornerstone of true innovation. She advocates for diversity of thought, experience, and perspective, recognising that technology plays a crucial role in shaping the future of humanity.
“The call for women to step into technology careers goes beyond the fight for equality. It is about weaving a richer tapestry of ideas, igniting change, and propelling the world towards a future brimming with possibilities,” Wijendra says. “The absence of women’s perspectives in the tech industry reduces half the world’s potential for innovation.”

Reflecting on her experience running an all-girl coding school, Wijendra observed a common sentiment among aspiring female technologists—a sense of intimidation by the tech field. In moments of doubt, being bypassed for leadership opportunities, and having technical inquiries directed to male colleagues, she draws inspiration from the story of Grace Hopper, a highly decorated computer pioneer. “Her legacy is not just a testament to her brilliance but a beacon of inspiration for women everywhere, affirming that talent and intelligence are boundless, transcending gender and the colour of one’s skin,” says Wijendra, finding hope and strength in allies who value competence over gender, and strives to counteract sexism by fostering a culture of support and mentorship among women in tech.
Wijendra’s journey serves as a vivid illustration of what can be achieved through resilience, mentorship, and a steadfast commitment to diversity and inclusion. It is not a solo endeavour but a collective movement. The path forward requires actively constructing a future where the tech industry mirrors the diversity of the world it serves.
The inclusion of women in tech is not an endpoint but a continuous journey of evolution, learning, and growth; and it is not just a moral obligation but a strategic necessity. “Together, we can turn the tide, ensuring that the tech industry becomes a beacon of progress, diversity, and equal opportunity for all,” says Wijendra, who was also one of Kotex’s “100 Most Influential Women in Tech,” highlighting her dedication to dismantling the barriers facing women in tech.
