Favourite Jeans is the first project where you have many roles: artist, composer, producer, lyricist, director, animator, cover artist. How did you juggle these roles?
I think artists should never limit themselves to one medium of expression. It’s always nice to explore different tools and perspectives in creating or curating your own story and art. Plus, nobody knows what I want better than I do.

I recently heard [American singer] Caroline Polachek’s inspiring speech, where she said “It’s easier to learn production than sit in the backseat”. From music production to video editing, she manages to do them all in her own style and it really shows. Similarly, I would like my work to be consistent both musically and visually like hers. Of course, there are lots of improvements to be made in the production since this is my first time doing it, but I’m very happy with the results. I finally understood the difficulties and importance of each of the roles. For example, I didn’t know there was a lot of work involved behind the logistics of gathering all the clothes.

It was also my first time mixing videos and stop-motion. I really enjoyed this post-production part with my co-director, Sandy Natsuly. Doodling everything frame by frame was very time-consuming, but it was fulfilling to take control of things.

Women find it hard to get recognition as producers, editors and directors in the music industry. What are your thoughts?
Female artists always have to work harder to be acknowledged, but also cannot work too hard so as not to intimidate other people. Many female artists are taking on multiple roles at the same time, but are still not receiving the recognition they deserve. But it won’t stop me from doing what I love. 

Any message to women trying to succeed in these fields?
You’re amazing. I love you.

Which women do you look up to in the creative scene?
Caroline Polachek, Raye, FKA Twigs …They have really inspired me to be everything I want. They’ve all experienced a point where people didn’t believe in them. 

They don’t just make their own music, they narrate their own story and I am still learning how to do that. FKA Twigs is the reason why I started dancing last year. Dancing has been a great alternative for me to connect with music. Hopefully one day I will be good enough to show this side of myself to the world.

Who are the artists you would like to collaborate with?
There are so many, but the two I’m thinking of right now are Joyce (就以斯) and Layton Wu from Taiwan. I feel that Joyce’s (就以斯) vibe and aesthetic match mine, and Layton Wu has a song that I accidentally came across called Blue Jeans, which is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard.

Your father is credited as “production support” in this music video. You have also created an Instagram account for your mum. Why is this important to you to highlight your family in your work?
My parents played an important role in shaping who I am as an artist and a human. My friends often say I am a balanced combination of them both. My mum is very vibrant and expressive while my dad is very observant and calm. I want my audience to see where my influences have come from and also acknowledge their talent.

What else do you have planned for this year?
I’m writing a lot for my next album. I’m also working on online and overseas live projects—which includes a show in Taiwan later this year. I also really want to shoot some music videos back in my hometown in Thailand.

Final question: what’s your favourite way to style jeans?
White tee and blue jeans. It always works, especially on a lazy day!
