Every issue, we ask our cover star a round of rapid-fire questions that give us a little more insight into their personalities. This month, Dee Poon lays it bare

Favourite place in Hong Kong?
Home.

Favourite book?
The Comfort Book by Matt Haig. It’s filled with comforting things. It’s so sweet, lovely and heart- warming to read a list of things that make him happy.

Favourite travel destination?
I love New York. I love cities, but I also love being out in nature with no one else.

Favourite scent?
The one we made for Pye with [world-renowned scent designer] Dawn Goldworm. We scent our stores in it. We worked through the whole process and I really enjoyed it. I also love the smell of trees.

Comfort dish?
I like bread and butter.

Favourite restaurant?
I’m not a foodie. My office is next to the Grand Hyatt; there are weeks where I’ve had lunch three times at the Grand Hyatt coffee shop. I eat for sustenance.

Favourite artwork?
When I was younger, I remember seeing [German artist] Andreas Gursky’s work at the Museum of Modern Art. It was so powerful.

Your idol?
If I didn’t say Margie ... (laughs). She’s role model number one and can do no wrong. But my father Dickson Poon taught me about excellence. He taught me that there are no standards other than high standards. Michelle [Yeoh] taught me about generosity. She’s the most generous and warmest person in the whole world.

Last time you cried?
Very recently, when I was getting off the plane after coming back from LA. Hong Kong has been through a lot and there was [a lot of stress getting back here]. It was my first holiday since Covid-19.

Best compliment you ever received?
When people say “Thank you for existing” or “I love you for who you are”— those are the things that give me the best feeling. They transform the way I feel and how I’m able to live.

Favourite gift from your mother?
Her love

Life motto
I use aspirational statements like “Enjoy the ride” and “Don’t worry because life is long, but also don’t worry because life is short. It’s over when it ends.”
