Dickson Poon is famed for operating a tight ship and bringing a disciplined, practical approach to the fashion industry. His company, Dickson Concepts, was born when he first established his own brand, Dickson Watch & Jewellery, in 1980, originally with a single store. He started to do franchising and licensing deals with other brands, and the company went public in 1986, after which it was able to buy French luxury brand ST Dupont in 1987, following that up with venerable British luxury department store chain Harvey Nichols in 1991.

He is well known for his philanthropic contributions to education: he donated £10 million to establish the Dickson Poon China Centre at Oxford University, and then followed that up by making a £20 million donation to King’s College London, the largest individual donation in the university’s history, which resulted in the law school being renamed The Dickson Poon School of Law. His charitable donations to educational institutions were also one of the key reasons he received a knighthood in 2015. He is married to Pearl and has five children, including Dee, managing director of Esquel Brands and Distribution; and Pearson, who is an executive director of Dickson Concepts.
