In this edition of Tatler’s Secrets of Success series—the all-access pass to the city’s most notable business magnates and entrepreneurs— Nicholas Ho reveals a quote he lives by and the qualities he looks for in his employees

Nicholas Ho is the chairman of Ho & Partners Architects, a leading multi-disciplinary architectural design practice headquartered in Hong Kong. He is also the Hong Kong representative to the APEC Business Advisory Council and a member of both the HKSAR Youth Development Commission and the HKSAR Trade and Industry Advisory Board. He is also among the youngest council members of Lingnan University and the Hong Kong Institute of Architects.

Ho is dedicated to public service and policy advocacy, and was elected as a member of 2021 HKSAR Election Committee. When he isn’t at work, he is a doting husband to art and culture strategist Stephanie Poon and a fun-loving father to three children. Here, Ho tells us the secrets to his success:

Describe what you do in one sentence.

I am an architect, but my aim is to be an architect for humanity.

How does your business make a difference?

We create diversified and inclusive cities, buildings and spaces all over the world, and we try to empower technological adoption in our projects [in order to be] a sandbox for the future.

What do you put your success down to?

Hard work, a good support system and good luck.

What are the top three ingredients for a successful business?

There are many common successful ingredients: perseverance, strategic thinking and compassion.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

I do. “Sometimes, clarity of vision and the power of depth triumphs over the haste of speed and the need for precision.”

What qualities do you look for in a potential employee?

A team player with a positive attitude.

What has been your biggest career obstacle to date? How did you overcome it?

It has always been about steering and balancing among stakeholders, growth and vision in this fast-changing world.

Do you have any business regrets? If so, what?

Not really: I think good lessons can be learnt from all experiences.

How do you plan to develop your business over the next five years?

Our aim is to stabilise growth for the core business, empower and invest in disruptive technologies, and advocate policy reform while expanding social outreach.

What is one surprising thing about you that most people don’t know?

I am a morning person, so I usually sleep before 10pm and wake up just after 5am.
