One of the Philippines' esteemed tastemakers of luxury retail shares future plans to continuously grow the empire before stepping down in the coming years

Zenaida "Nedy" Rustia Tantoco, Chairman and CEO of Rustan Commercial Corporation and Stores Specialists, Inc, has led Rustan's to the forefront of Philippine retail, even in the face of challenges brought about by the pandemic.

She is a woman of significant influence—both in corporate professionalism and lifestyle. While her family’s flagship retail establishment, Rustan’s in Makati, underwent renovation in 2021 to improve and expand its professionally curated roster of global brands, the SSI Group has continuously brought globally relevant brands to the Philippine luxury market, solidifying its presence in the country.

What are your projects in the last two years that you are most proud of? Why?

Zenaida Rustia Tantoco (ZRT): A recent project we started in the year 2021 is perhaps one of our most important decisions and that is to update and renovate our flagship store, Rustan's, at the Makati Commercial Center. We started on the first floor of our Beauty Hall, which we are hoping will open by November 2022. Just in time for the Christmas Season.

ZRT: In Store Specialists, Inc, we are proud of the recent opening of our Hermes Store at Greenbelt 3. The formal launch was held recently last September 23, 2022. It was a very successful opening judging from the number of guests who attended this event.

What challenges do you see now in your respective industry? How do you intend to help address these challenges?

ZRT: The main challenge of our stores and boutiques is to remain updated; to create an experiential time and moment for every visit that they make to our stores and boutiques by always making available the very latest merchandise from all over the world. We also want to specialize in holding country festivals the way that our foundress, Gliceria Tantoco used to do. Up to today her festival called "China Today" was an unforgettable experience for all our customers way back in the '80s.

ZRT: In 2023, we are looking forward to launching our Moroccan Festival Part II, where only the best of Morocco will be available in our stores particularly our Makati Flagship Store, our Shangrila Store and our Cebu Store.

Who do you look up to for guidance, inspiration or mentorship?

ZRT: Of course, there are two persons that I always look up to for guidance and inspiration: my mother, Gliceria Rustia Tantoco, and my father, Ambassador Bienvenido Rufino Tantoco. But, there are many people around the world who have been inspirations to Rustan for many years and who continue to inspire us in many ways. They form part of our business secrets which I hesitate to share.

What are your plans for the coming years and what keeps you going?

ZRT: I am planning my retirement for the coming years and looking forward to turning over the Group of Companies to the 3rd and 4th Generation of Tantocos.
