From young entrepreneurs to global trendsetters, we gathered a group of Hong Kong's hottest young professionals for an afternoon of fun at the AIA Carnival. Watch this space, because these trailblazers are on the rise:

Some view sandwiches as fast food to be eaten reluctantly and on the go, but this is a perception Chris Cheung is determined to change. The co-founder of artisanal sandwich maker Bread & Beast believes a great sandwich is a great meal—placed between two slices of bread.

Chris himself has the ingredients for success: a background in marketing and branding combined with an entrepreneurial spirit that runs in the family (his two sisters, Anne and Laura, have also founded successful businesses).

Chris says his role allows him to do all his favourite things, which are to cook, eat and meet new people—and he’ll now be able to do this on a global scale as Bread & Beast is to open pop-ups in Vietnam, New York and Sydney this year.

2. Adelene Chan

As a senior account manager at a global digital agency, Adelene Chan is in the business of experience transformation, she explains. This often transcends traditional digital marketing to include tech integrations across all areas of a business, starting with the way people experience a brand. This year is also a time of personal transformation for Adelene, as she’s vowed to make a conscious effort to slow down and practise mindfulness.

It’s not only her career that keeps her busy. The daughter of Peter Chan is a regular on the social circuit, often photographed with her sisters, Alison Chan-El Azar and Natalie Chan-Kwok. When she’s not out or busy in the office, you’ll find her watching Netflix and chilling with Puma, her Belgian Malinois.

3. Derek Cheung

Anyone who dismisses gaming as a mindless pastime has clearly never met Derek Cheung, one of the pioneers of esports. Since he founded Hong Kong Esports in 2013, the company has expanded rapidly and now has offices in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Vietnam and Indonesia, capitalising on growing demand for gaming in the region.

Derek admits to being a workaholic, but when he’s not at the office or travelling, he’s a homebody (and he’s single). He’s also a boy who loves his toys, evident from the fleet of Ferraris in his garage, all with custom number plates, including a cherry red one with a plate that reads HKESPORT.

4. Jenny Lam

Tidying-up guru Marie Kondo couldn’t have exploded onto the scene at a better time for Jenny Lam, VIP assistant manager at Vestiaire Collective, the online platform for pre-loved luxury goods. Jenny helps the city’s most stylish rid their wardrobes of items that no longer “spark joy.”

The daughter of Nina and Frankie Lam, Jenny loves meeting new people through her work and peeking inside their lavish wardrobes—though it’s not all glitz and glam as she’s often left with the task of lugging everything back to the office. Luckily, Jenny isn’t quick to lose her cool, thanks to her love of yoga and meditation, which she says keep her grounded.

5. Jasmine Chung

Don’t be fooled by Jasmine Chung’s petite frame; she’s got quite an appetite when it comes to fine cuisine. The foodie—her Instagram handle @jasminelovesuni hints at her predilections—is the eldest daughter of Mico Chung, the chairman of Capital Strategic Investment (CSI) Properties, which focuses on luxury residential and commercial projects.

She’s been learning the ropes in the leasing department, where her current task is to develop a vibrant tenant mix at CSI’s new development in Shelley Street, Central. She wants the building to draw the best Japanese restaurants in the city. The job gives her the perfect excuse to sample the latest restaurants and bars, and Jasmine confesses to enjoying the odd long lunch. She’s parlaying her hobby into a food blog she’s developing with a friend, so watch out for its debut.

6. Justin Chang

You don’t know what power dressing means until you’ve met Justin Chang, the grandson of the late Ascot Chang, founder in 1953 of the renowned Hong Kong shirt and suit business that bears his name. A tall, strapping young gent, Justin is always impeccably dressed.

He’s now deputy general manager of Ascot Chang, a role that has him involved in everything from product development to marketing, retail and corporate strategy. Justin, who initially had not planned to join the family business, has developed a passion for it and is keen to inject a contemporary spirit. He plans to launch the Ascot Chang e-commerce site by the end of the year.

7. Fiona McLeish

The year got off to a pretty good start for Fiona McLeish when long-time beau Kevin Poon popped the question atop a mountain in Hawaii, and she’s determined to follow it up with more personal milestones. The Scottish-Chinese model is always up for a challenge.

As well as adding countless campaigns to her diverse portfolio and being a regular on the red carpet, she is determined to break into the local film industry. She seems to be on track, given her recent acting gigs, and is represented by Kim Chou’s Style International Management Group, whose clients include Angelababy, Kiko Mizuhara and Lynn Xiong. So it’s fair to say Fiona is a star on the rise.

8. Sarah Zhuang

Three things that may surprise you about Sarah Zhuang: she loves rap music (play anything by J Cole, Drake or Kendrick Lamar and she’ll be happy), she loves to dance, and she has killer abs, perhaps the result of the dancing. Sarah lives by the ethos work hard, play harder.

Her eponymous jewellery label has gone from strength to strength since she founded it in 2017, now with points of sale in Hong Kong, Mainland China, Singapore, Japan and the UK. Sarah hopes to expand to the US this year. She loves the freedom that comes with running her own business but forgets to take time for herself, which explains why she’s more inclined to watch Netflix and chill than have a night out on the town.

A beaming smile and outgoing personality serve James Lie well as regional director of Village Roadshow, an Australian mass media and entertainment company that spans film production and distribution, cinemas and theme parks.

Heading up the Hong Kong office is a dream job for James, as he loves meeting new people and it involves regular travel around Asia wining, dining and closing deals with business partners and clients.

A budding collector with a passion for art and design, James is fast becoming a fixture on the city’s social scene. You’ll usually find him at a gallery dinner or an exhibition opening cracking jokes with the likes of Hugh Zimmern, Reina Chau and André Fu.
