The six-time Paralympian believes boccia helped him become the mentor he is today
Over an illustrious career spanning six Paralympic Games, Leung Yuk-wing has earned numerous accolades that has made him one of Hong Kong's most decorated athletes. Competing in the BC4 classification for boccia, Leung debuted at the Athens 2004 Paralympics, where he secured two gold medals, adding a silver in Beijing 2008, another gold in Rio 2016, and silver and bronze medals in Tokyo 2020. At the Paris 2024 Paralympics, Leung continued to shine, earning a silver medal in the Mixed Pairs BC4 event alongside boccia partner Annie Cheung.
Born with arthrogryposis, a condition characterised by joint stiffness and limited mobility, Leung faced challenges with daily activities such as reaching and dressing. Despite these physical constraints, he has transformed his condition into a driving force for his success. His journey into boccia began as a way to build confidence and overcome societal perceptions of disability, and the sport has since become a platform for showcasing his talent and determination.
Leung's contributions extend beyond his medal count, as he is deeply committed to advancing the sport of boccia in Hong Kong and inspiring the next generation of athletes. Known for his strategic mindset and adaptability, he has mentored aspiring players, emphasising the importance of resilience and precision in competition.
“Despite other people’s doubts about my potential for success, I remained steadfast in my belief that I could carve out a name for myself.”
