The rising boccia star won two silver medals at her first Paralympics

Annie Cheung made a remarkable entrance onto the global stage at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, securing two silver medals in boccia. She excelled in the Women’s Individual BC4 category and the Mixed Pairs BC4 event, partnering with Leung Yuk-wing. The youngest member of the Hong Kong boccia team at 25, Cheung demonstrated strategic prowess in a sport that demands precision, focus, and mental resilience.

Cheung’s rise to Paralympic success began with her introduction to boccia at the Hong Kong Red Cross Princess Alexandra School. By the age of 14, she joined the Hong Kong team and started competing internationally. In 2022, she claimed a bronze medal at the Boccia World Championships in Brazil, followed by a silver and a bronze at the 2023 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou.

Born with arthrogryposis, a condition that causes joint stiffness, Cheung has navigated life with limited mobility in her limbs and shoulders. This has not deterred her from excelling in boccia, a sport she finds intellectually stimulating due to its complex strategy. With the support of her family and coaches, Cheung is aiming for the gold at the 2028 Paralympic in Los Angeles.

“The road to success is always long, so we need to persist.”
