Our astrologer, De Rui, tells us all what to expect as we kick off the new year
The people, things, and values we hold dear come into focus as Venus zips quickly through three signs in the span of a month. On New Year’s Day, she joins forces with powerful Pluto, adding urgency and intensity to our feelings. On January 15, Venus makes harsh contact with Uranus, allowing raw impulse to hold sway over sound judgment. Investing great affection in new objects coming to our attention is possible.
Buyers’ remorse can descend by January 23, when Venus joins with Saturn, representing prudence and realism, supporting us to cast a more discerning eye over whatever or whomever it was we felt so strongly about in the preceding weeks. Regrets and changes of heart can be combined with taking corrective action at this time. Approach money matters and other significant outlays of energy and time with an extra bit of caution this month.

Three planets—Mercury, Mars, and Uranus—are set to come out of retrograde in the latter part of the month. Mars is first, stationing direct on January 13, after which tangible progress on work and other projects may begin to manifest again. This could become more noticeable after Mercury also turns direct on January 18, when making plans and communicating become more straightforward.
Uranus, symbolising the rebellious rule-breaker, emerges from its annual five-month retrograde on January 23. Zany, out-of-left-field ideas we have been mulling over in the past few months now seem to have more potential. Combined with fresh new direct energy of Mercury and Mars, the turning of Uranus helps to create a window for surprise decisions that could knock people’s socks off heading into February.
Major themes involved may include group ideals or dreams of a better future. An Aquarius New Moon forms on January 23, setting off two weeks of activity around the groups and collectives we are a part of – friend circles, industry networks, broader society – supporting any efforts we make toward changing the status quo. For those who don’t yet have dreams about the future they want to create, little acts of anarchy and resistance can prove to be an outlet for restlessness.
The Month by Sun Sign
Aries
Be careful with spending and emotional over-investment, though any mistakes you make in this regard won’t be as embarrassing as it could be for other Sun signs. Venus is also supporting your social appeal and attractiveness, so use the positive vibes to put yourself out there more. Your work projects and sports activities get a boost after January 18 when Mars comes out of retrograde, potentially carrying your efforts forward with ease until March. If it seems like things are moving along nicely, make the most of the energies by aiming even higher. The New Moon in Aquarius on January 22 especially asks that you set some intentions about how you want to change the world.
