Our astrologer, De Rui, tells us all what to expect as we kick off the new year

The people, things, and values we hold dear come into focus as Venus zips quickly through three signs in the span of a month. On New Year’s Day, she joins forces with powerful Pluto, adding urgency and intensity to our feelings. On January 15, Venus makes harsh contact with Uranus, allowing raw impulse to hold sway over sound judgment. Investing great affection in new objects coming to our attention is possible.

Buyers’ remorse can descend by January 23, when Venus joins with Saturn, representing prudence and realism, supporting us to cast a more discerning eye over whatever or whomever it was we felt so strongly about in the preceding weeks. Regrets and changes of heart can be combined with taking corrective action at this time. Approach money matters and other significant outlays of energy and time with an extra bit of caution this month.

Three planets—Mercury, Mars, and Uranus—are set to come out of retrograde in the latter part of the month. Mars is first, stationing direct on January 13, after which tangible progress on work and other projects may begin to manifest again. This could become more noticeable after Mercury also turns direct on January 18, when making plans and communicating become more straightforward.

Uranus, symbolising the rebellious rule-breaker, emerges from its annual five-month retrograde on January 23. Zany, out-of-left-field ideas we have been mulling over in the past few months now seem to have more potential. Combined with fresh new direct energy of Mercury and Mars, the turning of Uranus helps to create a window for surprise decisions that could knock people’s socks off heading into February.

Major themes involved may include group ideals or dreams of a better future. An Aquarius New Moon forms on January 23, setting off two weeks of activity around the groups and collectives we are a part of – friend circles, industry networks, broader society – supporting any efforts we make toward changing the status quo. For those who don’t yet have dreams about the future they want to create, little acts of anarchy and resistance can prove to be an outlet for restlessness.

The Month by Sun Sign

Aries

Be careful with spending and emotional over-investment, though any mistakes you make in this regard won’t be as embarrassing as it could be for other Sun signs. Venus is also supporting your social appeal and attractiveness, so use the positive vibes to put yourself out there more. Your work projects and sports activities get a boost after January 18 when Mars comes out of retrograde, potentially carrying your efforts forward with ease until March. If it seems like things are moving along nicely, make the most of the energies by aiming even higher. The New Moon in Aquarius on January 22 especially asks that you set some intentions about how you want to change the world.

Taurus

Planning ahead and thinking about your ambitions is well-supported right now. Take the beginning of a new year to refresh your goals and align your actions with where you see yourself in ten years. By the January 7 Full Moon, the energetic focus begins to shift to more private matters, which you would do well to pay some extra TLC to. Emotional issues, family dynamics, or themes related to your heritage and where you come from can all come up to your attention and contemplation. All month long, beware of over-investing valuable resources on people or propositions you haven’t had time to get to know. Mercury comes out of retrograde on January 13 to further assist with clear thinking and decision making.

Gemini

Getting out and doing some sports or physical activity is a great way to channel the energy that Mars brings to your sign. Especially after January 18, when the Warrior planet turns direct, you will appreciate having more outlets to burn off some of the fiery power that is coming your way. With Venus in supportive position all month, working with others can be a breeze as you navigate others’ needs and your own with more agility and deftness. This is also a good month to be more active in your social circles, as your personal appeal is enhanced. The Aquarius New Moon on January 22 presents an opportunity to set goals for how you will co-create the future.

Cancer

A Full Moon is illuminated in your sign on January 7, bringing self-appreciation and greater awareness of what makes you special. Whatever your gender, you are naturally attuned to feminine principles of intuition, empathy, and nurturance which exists in each person. Defending these qualities against more authoritative or left-brain focused people may be part of the journey in the middle two weeks of this month. You may have to demonstrate the meaning of soft power or quiet strength by your example. On the relationship front, asteroid Juno’s move into Aries after January 13 could potentially bring challenges to your ego. Try to work through any difficulties with your spouse or long-term partner without letting your pride get in the way.

Leo

Consider your values and desires more carefully as excess spending or over-investment is a real possibility. Superficial assessments of people and things that look irresistible could potentially put you in a hole you won’t want to be in. Devoting too much time and energy into the wrong recipients could similarly lead to disappointment. As the month progresses, and particularly after the Aquarius New Moon on January 22, your attention may shift to bigger concerns beyond personal desires, such as how you can make a difference in the world. The latter part of the month brings people into your life who are very different, and yet can appreciate your quirks. A long-term relationship offers support for how you want to shine.

Virgo

This could be a more focused, productive period for you as last month’s New Moon in Capricorn continues to support purposeful planning and the mapping out of your ambitions. The January 7 Full Moon in Cancer can bring new, resonant ideas about the role of family, nurturance and closing ranks with those closest to you. Fully utilise Mercury’s retrograde through to January 18 to mull over future directions. The answers are likely to come from within rather than from an external source. Expect others to pose challenges and put up obstacles even after Mars changes direction on January 13. As long as you don’t take things personally or let your ego get bruised, these bumps in the road can strengthen you.

Libra

Venus is in supportive position this month, enhancing your social appeal and possibly your love life to boot. The errors of judgment likely to befall others are less likely to cause embarrassment or bruise your ego too much. Mars coming alive again in Gemini on January 13 is beneficial for advancing the projects you have underway. Combined with the energies of the Full Moon on January 22, this could turn out to be a good time to brainstorm about the kind of impact you want to have and the future you want to co-create. Inspired thoughts can be readily coupled with concrete action and experimentation. Continue to double-check business correspondence and other important messages before Mercury turns direct on January 18.

Scorpio

Longer-term goals and ambitions could play on your mind as last month’s Capricornian energies might have provided fresh motivation or inspiration. Efforts at building your public profile may take a turn after the Cancer Full Moon on January 7, when the focus shifts to strengthening your private life. Dynamics within your family and home, perhaps involving your ancestry or heritage can come up for discussion. Hold off of making any large purchases or investments of time and energy since you might find it difficult to make realistic judgments of value at this time. The more pressing or urgent the desire, the more you will need to be cautious about jumping in. The Aquarius Full Moon on January 22 ushers in big ideas and might be just the distraction you need.

Sagittarius

Holiday cheer carries on into the new year for you as Venus moves into prime position for continued indulgence and social activity. Beware of the misjudgments of value that can happen to all signs at this time, although you are more likely to emerge from any indiscretions unscathed. The resumption of momentum for work or personal projects should be palpable after January 13, although don’t expect all frictions and challenges to go away. Obstacles and differences of opinion at this time can be extremely beneficial if you can put your pride aside. The second half of the month is a great time to strengthen your marriage or love partnership. Effort you put in on that front will bring rewards and reaffirm how it is you want to shine.

Capricorn

The current period is highly supportive of your predilection for planning and mapping out ambitions and goals for the future. Continue to push forward and even experiment a bit with different pathways toward success. At the Cancer Full Moon on January 7, the focus turns to more private matters. Family ties, emotional issues, connections to the past may require more of your attention and mental bandwidth. In the middle two weeks of the month, try and deal with these topics head on rather than kick the can down the road. Mercury supports your thinking and ideas even more after January 18. Your marriage or long-term partner offers deep validation in the first half of the month.

Aquarius

You are firing on multiple cylinders with both Venus and Mars moving into supportive position. Socially, this is a great time to get together with friends and reaffirm your networks since your charm and presence can be more appreciated. Momentum on projects you are working on picks up significantly after Mars changes direction on January 13. Beware of being tripped up by miscommunication or insufficient planning in the first half of the month as Mercury’s retrograde continues to sow low-level chaos. By the time the New Moon forms in your sign on January 22, expect a period of pushing forward with new dreams and goals, and perhaps new ideas about who you want to work with to build a better world.

Pisces

Achieving worldly success may not be the end-all-be-all but efforts you are making right now can land, surprisingly, in all the right places. Now is a good time to be thinking about who you want to be in ten years, and plot out some different routes to get there. On January 7, the Full Moon in Cancer shifts the energies somewhat to more private matters and you may be pulled toward holding space for emotional struggles and family matters. Mercury continues to support your logical thinking, which will be more palpable after January 13. Cooperation with others and alignments of goals cannot be counted on at the moment, but take any conflicting viewpoints as a chance to review what exactly you are aiming for.
