Christopher Owen, Alex Jiaravanont, Septime Webre, Gus Lee and Brandon Chau share their favourite family traditions ahead of Father’s Day
As Father’s Day approaches, we turn our attention to the unsung heroes of the family— our dearest dads. While the day is often marked by gifts, cards or quality time, many families have cultivated their own traditions to celebrate the father-child bond all year long. In this article, we sit down with five Tatler fathers to discover the family traditions, customs and more that they’ve built over the years. From soufflé dinners, coffee mornings and trips to Italy, each father has found their own traditions that have strengthened the bonds between them and their children.

Since my daughter was young, I would take her on early morning walks. What started as a way to get some exercise during the pandemic became our little daddy-daughter adventure. What I have come to cherish the most though are the simple moments we share over a cup of coffee and babycino, at the end of every walk.

Every Sunday, my son and I must have dinner with my father. It is my father’s weekly highlight, and it is important to let my son know how many people in the world care about him. We will not be here forever, so I hope he continues this ritual when he has his own family.

For the past two years, I have taken my sons, who are now 14 and 12, on one-on-one trips to Italy for two weeks. Italy is a place that is special to me and I love sharing my experience with my sons now that they are old enough. We see the sights, check out the museums and visit some of my favourite restaurants and tailors. It is a trip that we often talk about and have so many memories to look back on. It’s an important trip to build deeper connections with my sons, to really get to know them on a deeper level and for them to know me as well. I have a four year old son as well and I look forward to taking him to Italy someday.

We are soufflé lovers! We try to celebrate special occasions with sweet (or savoury) soufflés whenever we can. We have some favourites. In Hong Kong, it’s the Grand Marnier soufflé at Chesa in The Peninsula; in Paris, it’s the three-course, all-soufflé set dinner at Le Soufflé; and in Phuket, it’s the lobster, blue crab and chocolate soufflés at Mom Tri’s Kitchen in Kata Noi. Yummy!

As a family, we enjoy supporting Rocco’s passion for football and our weekends now revolve around matches and competitions with his team. It’s great to see a group of kids develop together. They win some, lose some, and learn lessons about life through sport and friendship.
