The Hong Kong swimmer, who spends a lot of time in the French Riviera—because that’s where her mother lives—gives us an insider’s guide on what to do, where to stay and how to enjoy nature at Nice, Cannes and Monaco

Every summer, the south of France attracts millions of tourists with its sun-drenched coastlines, unique architecture and glamorous beach resorts in Saint-Tropez and the independent microstate of Monaco. But for the non-local, the French Riviera can be a challenge to navigate, because it’s full of historical villages, hidden nature spots and beaches that locals would prefer to keep to themselves.

Luckily for us, Hong Kong Olympic swimmer Camille Cheng is very familiar with the Côte d’Azur, especially Nice and Cannes. Her mother lives in this region, and the Franco-Chinese athlete finds it the perfect place to reset and rejuvenate between international competitions. Cheng, who is preparing for the Paris Olympics now, shares with Tatler some of her and her mum’s favourite spots in the region. So whether you’re travelling through the French Rivera for the Cannes Film Festival, for the summer holidays or for the Olympics, here are Cheng’s recommendations for hotels, diving spots, hikes and more.

La Chèvre d’Or is another five-star hotel located on the French Riviera. The institution was originally a private castle, which was turned into a restaurant by British hotelier Robert Wolf in 1953. He later turned it into a hotel on the advice of Walt Disney. Today, the Château de La Chèvre d’Or has 45 rooms and suites, but our favourite part is the panoramic views from its terrace. Why not enjoy it with over a meal or a drink or two?

Nice’s old town is a fantastic place to stroll the streets and eat some local Provençale delicacies. Cheng recommends walking through the Cours Saleya market and stopping at the bar/café Barbacane to drink a noisette (similar to a macchiato), while watching people pass by. And if you feel peckish, stop by Les Agitateurs or Chez Pipo for local specialities such as socca—a crispy chickpea pancake from Nice.
