In Tatler Asia’s The Suite Spot, we showcase the world’s most beautiful hotels. This week, we look at a calming getaway in Bali that is at the forefront of sustainable, regenerative tourism
Nestled on the southernmost tip of Bali, Alila Villas Uluwatu sits on one of the most prime oceanfront locations on the Island of the Gods with an unobstructed view of its majestic cliffs, dramatic coastline and the sparkling Indian Ocean. The property spreads across an expansive lush 14 hectares that have been designed and sculpted to provide all the material comforts of a five-star hotel. Think: a picturesque infinity pool that stretches out into the horizon (easily the most popular Instagram spot on the whole premises), an award-winning spa, two restaurants (one serving European/Mediterranean-inspired cuisine, and another serving up hearty Indonesian fare), and a “floating” bar.

But what impresses the most is the sustainability-focused approach that the property has taken with its design. The brainchild of Singaporean architectural firm Woha, the property incorporates local building material such as local bamboo on the ceilings to insulate rooms from heat, lime stone cut from the original site, as well as the innovative use of locally-sourced lava rock on the roofs to absorb heat from the relentless Balinese sun. Look hard enough and you will also notice the clever upcycling of materials such as wood from railway sleepers and telephone poles in various parts of the hotel as well. Even the plants and vegetation found on the property have also been carefully selected—local species found in the immediate region have been thoughtfully raised on the surrounds.
What results is a calming oasis that does not fail to surprise and delight the eye, mind and body at every turn. With such comfort and ease at your fingertips, we are truly of the belief that you actually do not have to take a single step beyond its front gate—after all, when you have such a rejuvenating sanctuary to melt away your cares, why would you need to leave? Here, we speak to the hotel’s managing director, Hemal Jain to find out more about what makes Alila Villas Uluwatu such an alluring destination.
