Tatler spends the weekend at the Cyberport hotel that has been renovated to be more environmentally friendly and is ready to welcome visitors travelling with family or furry friends

With Hong Kong gradually opening back up to travel and visitors, the city’s hospitality industry is bracing for what will hopefully be a rebound of travellers from all corners of the globe. With that in mind, many hotels in the city are looking to revamp their facilities and services to prepare for this rebound.

With Le Méridien Hong Kong, which  had initially positioned itself as a high-tech hotel for visiting IT professionals when it first opened in the mid 2000s, it had to pivot when that vision fell short and the hotel had to change its strategy in response to an evolving market. And pivot it did: undergoing extensive renovations before re-opening in late 2022 as a pet-friendly, family-friendly five-star hotel with a focus on sustainability.

Tatler recently had the chance to stay at Le Méridien after its renovations, and here is what it was like.

First impressions

From the outside Le Méridien is all about the modern aesthetics—all gleaming glass and metal—and the modernity is only accentuated as we enter the lobby. Marble floors and chic blue minimalistic seating arrangements juxtapose against the wooden accents of the bar opposite to the reception. The blue of the furniture extends to two digital art pieces by local artist Rocky Fong hanging in the lobby. The check-in service itself is smooth, taking less than ten minutes, and the staff were polite and efficient.

Do not disturb

Once checked in, we headed to our west-facing corner room on the fifth floor. The room itself, at 380 sq ft, is of modest size, but the floor-to-ceiling windows make the room feel much more open and spacious. The blue-and-white theme from the lobby also spills into the room with pops of vibrant teal as the accent colour in an otherwise white space. The bedroom is equipped with all the standard amenities for a comfortable stay, plus you can request for things like a stepper, yoga mat, dehumidifier, as well as anything one might need when travelling with a baby—such as bottle warmers, sterilisers, bath basins and more.

What any restless sleeper or someone who might be used to a specific kind of pillow at home would appreciate is the hotel’s comprehensive pillow menu. Some of its options include a buckwheat pillow and a pressure-relieving pillow. We chose a latex pillow for its hypoallergenic qualities, and it was delivered to the room within five minutes.

The bathroom, while small, is well-stocked with products from New York-based skincare brand Malin+Goetz. There was one small hiccup: the water from the shower cubicle had spilled onto the bathroom floor, but the hotel staff was quick to come up and wipe it dry.

Le Méridien offers several room options to choose from, including connected rooms with child-friendly safeguards for families; pet-friendly rooms with pet beds, accessories and more for those travelling with furbabies; ocean-facing rooms and suites for couples or single travellers looking to indulge themselves, and more.

Bells and whistles

No visitor to Le Méridien Hong Kong can fail to notice the hotel’s efforts at being sustainable. Instead of being stocked with plastic water bottles, each room has its own purified water dispenser, so you can stay hydrated and prevent plastic from ending up in Hong Kong landfills at the same time. The hotel also has its own microgreens garden, and uses fresh basil, thyme, rosemary and other herbs grown there in its kitchens.

There is also an outdoor pool—which was closed for renovations during our visit—and a gym, but if you’re staying at Le Méridien, we recommend getting your daily exercise by stepping out onto the verdant park just outside. It’s perfect for jogging, playing with your kids or taking your pet for a walk. In fact, we’d say that Le Meridien’s location, with its surrounding greenery and the waterfront promenade just outside, immensely bolsters its family- and pet-friendly appeal.

Wine and dine

The hotel has four dining outlets: Chinese restaurant Nam Fong, casual dining venue Southside Bistro, Japanese izakaya Umami, and lounge and bar Latitude 22. We checked out Southside Bistro, which combines French cooking with Asian ingredients, for dinner and started with a refreshing tomato salad with burrata cheese, which whetted our appetite with its tartness.

Up next was the octopus potato salad with microgreens from the in-house garden. The octopus was lightly charred and tender, with the herbs adding freshness. The true highlight of the meal, however, were the seafood linguine—with generous portions of clams, scallops, prawns—and the wagyu striploin steak with its charred yet buttery flavour. While we dined inside, we noticed several pet owners enjoying their meal with their furry friends at the al fresco section of the restaurant. Also, the restaurant offered a pet menu that included dishes such as ground organic beef and green peas.

For breakfast, which has both an a la carte and semi-buffet menus, we opted for an omelette with Hong Kong-style spicy crab and sides of avocado and hash brown from the a la carte menu. It was the perfect way to wrap up our weekend.

Overall, our staycation at Le Méridien was relaxing, but what impressed us most was its dining options, which is just as well, because otherwise there is not much to choose from at Cyberport. Le Méridien more than makes up for it and adds to the whole hotel experience.
