Switzerland is synonymous with Swiss watches and stunning Alpine landscapes, according to businessman Emerson Yao. He loves the outdoor lifestyle, from hiking and biking to simply enjoying the mountain views. A fan of fine watchmaking, he also values the country’s precision, seen in both its culture and efficient public transport.

He appreciates Switzerland’s artistic spirit, with public art seamlessly integrated into everyday life, and its cultural diversity across the various cantons. His favourite spots include the Swiss Alps and villages near peaks like the Matterhorn and Jungfraujoch. He never misses Swiss chocolates, raclette, sausages and local beers. Annual highlights are the Watches and Wonders expo in Geneva and the Basel Fasnacht carnival. Switzerland has deepened its respect for nature and inspired a more sustainable way of living.

Switzerland holds a special place in the hearts of Nenet and Hr Schmid, each drawn to the country for different yet complementary reasons. For Nenet, it evokes images of the Alps, serene lakes, flowing rivers and the gentle toll of cow and church bells—symbols of peace and calm. She treasures the balance between vibrant urban centres like Zurich and the slower, more mindful rhythm of daily life that values time and nature. Having lived there for 17 years, she describes Switzerland as a postcard-perfect landscape where efficient zoning keeps the natural world always within reach. Her favourite place is the breathtaking village of Stoos, accessible via the world’s steepest funicular, offering panoramic Alpine views and a car-free escape. She’s especially fond of Zurich’s annual Street Parade, a vibrant techno festival that transforms the quiet city into a global celebration of love and freedom. Her favourite dish is kalbslaeberli with spaetzli and apple mousse, best followed by a glass of Zurich’s famously delicious and clean tap water.

For HR, Switzerland is home to an independent, neutral nation with a strong sense of self and resilient people. He admires its direct democracy and unique traditions, from fondue and raclette to the sport of Schwingen, river swimming and motorbiking through mountain passes. His fondest destination is Klosters near Davos, a family favourite since 2004. A devoted fan of local culture, he looks forward to Basel’s Fastnacht carnival each year, particularly the magical 4 am Morgestraich. He values Switzerland’s ability to integrate diverse cultures through mutual respect and personal accountability. He believes the country’s multilingualism and independence help it avoid the pitfalls faced by many larger nations. His preferred meal is züri geschnetzeltes with rösti, paired with a Rivella—a uniquely Swiss drink best enjoyed within its borders. Together, the couple reflect how Switzerland’s natural beauty, cultural richness and thoughtful pace of life continue to shape their worldviews in profound and lasting ways.

Lake Lucerne is their favourite natural spot, with its blue waters and majestic mountains offering the perfect setting for hiking and boating. Their go-to meal is beef tartare from Sprüngli, paired with a glass of Ticino Merlot —a combination that feels like coming home.

They admire how Switzerland balances multiple languages and cultural influences through shared values such as independence, unity and a deep respect for tradition. Since moving to the Philippines, their visits have taken on even more meaning, reminding them that simplicity, time with loved ones and a strong connection to nature are what truly matter.
