Looking for a way to amplify the December cheer? Try these Asian holiday destinations for size

Asia doesn’t do Christmas in a single language. It does it in neon canyons and candlelit churches, in tropical nights perfumed with frangipani, in futuristic light shows reflected on glass towers and in snow-dusted streets where winter feels like an old poem. Whether or not Christmas is widely practised, the region transforms during this festive season—glowing, bustling and impossibly photogenic. Here, the holiday destinations that turn December into something cinematic.

In case you missed it: 7 unique winter illuminations that bring the festive spirit across Japan

1. Tokyo, Japan

In Tokyo, holiday lighting isn’t a seasonal decoration—it’s a design discipline. Roppongi Hills and Tokyo Midtown unveil choreographed LED installations that glow in elegant shades of sapphire and champagne. Marunouchi’s iconic Naka-dori Street lines trees with gold lights, creating a polished, fashion-editorial kind of romance. For pure spectacle, Yomiuri Land’s “Jewellumination” drapes its attractions in jewel-toned bulbs, turning a theme park into a kaleidoscope.

2. Singapore

Singapore’s holiday season is a glossy, high-production fantasy. Orchard Road becomes a glittering boulevard—arches, statement installations and interactive displays stretching for nearly three kilometres. But nothing beats Christmas Wonderland at Gardens by the Bay, where European-inspired Spalliera sculptures tower over a festive market and nightly faux snow falls between the Supertrees. It’s Christmas, but make it futuristic, tropical and camera-ready.

3. Hong Kong

Few cities do urban drama like Hong Kong. Every December, Victoria Harbour becomes a stage set: skyscrapers light up in synchronised LED animations, complemented by the nightly Symphony of Lights. Wander through Tsim Sha Tsui East or Harbour City, and you’ll find whimsical displays—sometimes even Disney collaborations—transforming shopping arcades into immersive festive worlds. The joy is in the density: you can stroll one block and encounter three different, world-class installations.

4. Seoul, South Korea

Seoul leans into winter with equal parts warmth and theatricality. The Shinsegae Department Store in Myeongdong unveils a full-scale LED media façade, drawing crowds with its dazzling narrative displays. Along Cheonggyecheon Stream, illuminated art installations—some from the Lantern Festival—turn the riverbanks into an open-air gallery. Over at Lotte World, massive Christmas villages and light-drenched plazas create a holiday atmosphere straight out of a charmingly chaotic K-drama.

New Taipei City has one mission in December: to build a full-scale Christmas fantasy. Christmasland in Banqiao District features a light show using projection technology, alongside sprawling festive markets. It’s hyper-concentrated, like stumbling into a holiday amusement park that happens to be free, family-friendly and open for more than a month.

6. Bangkok, Thailand

Bangkok

Always one of the most beloved holiday destinations, Bangkok treats Christmas like an art competition—and the malls are the main contenders. CentralWorld Square erects one of Southeast Asia’s tallest Christmas trees, surrounded by pop-art installations and futuristic photo zones. Siam Paragon and IconSiam follow suit with high-fashion displays and immersive digital backdrops. It’s Christmas as Bangkok does best: bold, playful and unapologetically luxe.

7. Almaty, Kazakhstan

In Kazakhstan, the December mood is built around New Year (Yangi Yil / Novyi God), but the festive atmosphere is unmistakably universal. Almaty’s Republic Square and Astana’s futuristic avenues glitter with spectacular light curtains, towering yolka (New Year Trees) and intricate ice sculptures. It’s familiar, yet not: holiday lights filtered through Central Asian architecture, crisp winter air and vast mountain horizons.

8. Goa, India

While much of India celebrates Christmas in quieter traditions, Goa does it with colour, community and unmistakable joy. Panaji and Old Goa glow with lanterns and poinsettias, while the Basilica of Bom Jesus stands radiant with lights. But the real charm lies in Goa’s streets, where families hang giant star-shaped paper lanterns—akasha kandel—across entire neighbourhoods. It’s a Christmas full of warmth, devotion and palm-fringed nights.

9. Lahore and Karachi, Pakistan

In Pakistan’s major cities, Christmas is intimate but beautifully expressive. Pakistan may not be top of mind when it comes to holiday destinations, but it doesn’t scrimp on the decor. Churches in Lahore and Karachi glow with lights and nativity scenes, while Christian neighbourhoods (“colonies”) string fairy lights and star lanterns across streets. It’s a deeply local celebration that is warm, heartfelt and echoing with community carols that drift into the night.
