From steakhouse and hotpot dinners to luxury beds, these cinemas across Asia are giving viewers a reason to return to the big screen
Cinemas across Asia are transforming the moviegoing experience in response to the rise of streaming platforms and post-pandemic shifts in audience habits. While Hollywood blockbusters such as Dune, Barbie, Oppenheimer, Wicked and Top Gun: Maverick reignited interest in the big screen, cinemas themselves are evolving—offering gourmet meals, luxury beds, private balcony suites and even themed interiors that rival the set design of the films themselves. From hotpot dinners in Chengdu to Wes Anderson-inspired halls in Kuala Lumpur, these unique cinema concepts go far beyond popcorn and soda, turning a simple screening into a night to remember.

Wolfgang’s Premiere Lounge: steak dinners for movie night (Philippines)
Popcorn and soda may be cinema staples, but at Wolfgang’s Premiere Lounge in the Philippines, the experience is a cut above. Here, moviegoers can savour a select menu by Wolfgang’s Steakhouse—think burger sliders, steak and eggs, and roast beef sandwiches—served before, during or after the screening.
For those who prefer mid-movie dining, each plush Lay-Z-Boy recliner features a call button for discreet butler service. A sleek cocktail bar in the lounge area sets the tone for an indulgent night out, making this one of the most elevated ways to catch a film in the Philippines.

Luxury bed cinemas (South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines)
For viewers who love to watch films cocooned in comfort, luxury bed cinemas bring the cosiness of home to the silver screen. In Bangkok, the Embassy Diplomat Screens elevate luxe lounging with everything from grand sofas and daybeds to plush loft-style nooks. Depending on the theatre, guests can sip drinks from a personal minibar or summon a butler with the touch of a button.
In the Philippines, the Tempur Cinema at Uptown Mall in Bonifacio Global City allows filmgoers to recline on adjustable Tempur beds, meticulously maintained by the housekeeping staff of Megaworld Hotels and Resorts. Complimentary snacks, blankets, and pillows are provided, alongside a dedicated butler service.
In Malaysia, the Getha Lux Suites at Aurum Theatre in Kuala Lumpur offer plush recliners complete with pillows, blankets, and slippers. Each seat features a built-in mini-fridge and charging ports, adding a touch of indulgence to the viewing experience.
Cinema chain CJ CGV has offered the Tempur Cinema experience in select locations in and around Seoul, while CGV Cinemas Indonesia’s Velvet Class is found in a number of cities around the country, including Jakarta and Bandung. This upscale option features luxurious double beds instead of standard cinema seats, providing an intimate and comfortable viewing experience ideal for couples or groups. This service typically includes a private call button, gourmet food options and attentive staff ensuring that the experience feels more like a private lounge than a traditional cinema.
Hotpot cinemas: cooking up an extraordinary movie experience (China, Malaysia)
Originating in Chengdu, China, this one-of-a-kind cinema concept allows moviegoers to enjoy a hotpot dining experience—complete with individual pots, raw ingredients, soup base, and sauces—while watching a film. They don’t just serve the meal; guests actively cook their hotpot in the theatre, blending the unique dining experience with cinematic escapism. Far from a fleeting trend, the idea has proved its staying power. In fact, the hotpot cinema has made its way to Malaysia, where Dadi Cinema at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur launched its version in 2024.

In the cinema itself, guests can choose between recliners or Tempur beds, complete with slippers and blankets for added comfort. From valet parking to private lifts, every detail is designed to make an evening at the movies feel like a five-star affair.

In South Korea, Lotte Cinema’s Cine Family private booths and CGV’s Private Box and Suite Cinema offer filmgoers the option of watching movies from their own enclosed box. Seating ranges from plush recliners to Tempur beds, with select boxes equipped with thoughtful amenities such as coffee machines, minibars, volume controls, and individual air-conditioning.
Meanwhile, in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, Vox Cinemas’ Theatre Pods deliver a futuristic reimagining of balcony-style viewing. Designed by Ōma Cinema® and conceptualised by French architect Pierre Chican, these IMAX-optimised pods are inspired by classical theatre balconies. Each pod accommodates up to five guests and features advanced recliners, gourmet dining options, and dedicated personal service—offering an ultra-exclusive take on the cinema experience.

At Aurum Theatre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, movie night gets a playful twist at Escape Studios. Depending on the hall, filmgoers may find themselves transported to Tokyo or Paris, immersed in the cosy Nordic atmosphere of Hygge Hall, or lounging in the vivid pop-art surroundings of Diptych Hall, a tribute to Andy Warhol. Another is Tenenbaum Hall, a whimsical space styled after Wes Anderson’s distinct cinematic aesthetic.
Far more than just themed decor, these cinemas create a fully immersive atmosphere where the venue itself becomes part of the entertainment—turning every film into an occasion and every screening into an Instagram-worthy experience.
