The Belmond Andean Explorer winds through the Peruvian highlands between Cusco, Puno and Arequipa, at altitudes ranging from 2,500 to 5,000 metres above sea level. In April, Hong Kong-based jewellery brand co-founders Calvin Wang and Vincent Raffin boarded with a simple ambition: to slow down. “This trip had lingered at the top of our bucket list for years,” says Wang. The celebrated train, which served as the couple’s base for three days, took them across a landscape of stark contrasts—from fleeting glimpses of daily Andean life along the tracks, past the remains of an ancient settlement to the silence of remote mountain passes. Tatler retraces their journey through the South American country.

Off the train, they walked the ruins of the Incan religious site at Raqch’i, stood on the shores of Lake Titicaca, and ventured out to Taquile Island, home to a weaving tradition recognised by Unesco as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. On the lake itself, they met members of the Uros indigenous community, whose technique for creating hand-built floating islands, constructed from native totora reeds, predates the Incan empire. And at night, parked at the remote highland station of Saracocha, they gazed up at the Milky Way, clearly visible to the naked eye.
