Discover conscious luxury at the reimagined Lagen Island Resort in Palawan. Our curated guide unveils an intimate sanctuary where pristine nature and Filipino heritage intertwine
Nestled in the northern reaches of Palawan, El Nido has long been celebrated as an award-winning destination of unparalleled beauty. Located within Bacuit Bay, a managed resource protected area encompassing 45 islands and islets, El Nido is a remarkable seascape defined by dramatic limestone cliffs, pristine beaches and thriving marine biodiversity. Amidst this ecological wonder lies Lagen Island Resort, a beloved tropical sanctuary that opened a new chapter in January 2026 following a sweeping and meticulous transformation.
For the modern traveller seeking more than just a picturesque backdrop, the resort offers a masterclass in conscious luxury, intentional design and deep cultural reverence.

The revamp
The reimagined Lagen Island Resort is a testament to quiet luxury and environmental stewardship. In a bold move to regain the beachfront and restore more of the island’s natural beauty, the resort thoughtfully reduced its footprint by removing several villas originally built by the shore. It now offers an intimate collection of just 42 Forest Rooms and Water Villas.
This story-led evolution was brought to life through a multidisciplinary collaboration between WATG, Wimberly Interiors Studio, Henning Larsen and Ayala Land Hospitality’s creative team. The design is unmistakably Filipino, weaving contemporary elegance with profound cultural narratives. Guests are welcomed into an arrival hall, aptly called the Boathouse, inspired by iconic paraw sailing boats, complete with hand-carved wood and ceramic beadwork crafted by local artisans. Throughout the resort, one finds the masterful work of local talent—from Artisano Kabalan’s clay bricks to the intricate Giyangganan weaving patterns of the Batak tribe.
Paloma Urquijo Zobel de Ayala, Ayala Land’s creative director, explains the vision: “Every corner of the resort is an opportunity to discover something about our culture, our history and the incredible talent of Filipino artisans and makers.”

Yet, the architecture is only half the story. The true brilliance of the improved resort lies in its customer journey, which has been rigorously mapped out to ensure a frictionless experience. “Nature is the protagonist, not the resort,” notes Zobel de Ayala. “We want guests to spend less time thinking about logistics and more time immersed in the beauty of Palawan.”

Above Filipino touches abound inside the water villa
Gustavo Morales, chief operating officer of Ayala Land Hospitality, echoes this intentionality. “The moment a guest steps off the boat and onto Lagen, we want them to feel something that is increasingly rare in modern travel—a complete and immediate release,” he shares. “Not just from the noise of daily life, but from the need to perform, to plan, to be anywhere other than exactly where they are.”
To match the spectacular surroundings, the service is elevated yet grounded. “Our team is trained to read each guest not as a booking profile, but as an individual with a particular reason for being there,” Morales adds. “Service that matches the environment means service that is present without being intrusive, warm without being performative”.
