This year’s Olympic Games kick off in July—ahead of the biggest sports event of the year, here are all the Hong Kong athletes that should be on your radar
The Paris Olympic Games 2024 is just around the corner and some of the world’s best athletes are ready to bring their A-game to the arena. From July 26 to August 11, the world’s largest sporting event will see more than 10,500 athletes competing across 32 sports and among them are some from our own city.
Hong Kong, which has won six medals at the last Olympics, has delivered strong performances in swimming, table tennis, badminton and fencing in the past. There’s no doubt that the city’s sporting stars will try to uphold and build upon this legacy this year too.
From veteran athletes such as fencer Edgar Cheung Ka-long and swimmer Siobhán Haughey to up-and-coming ones such as taekwondo fighter Lo Wai-fung, here are all the Hong Kong athletes that should be on your radar.

1. Badminton: Lee Cheuk-yiu, Lo Happy Sin-yan, Yeung Nga-ting, Yeung Pui-lam, Tang Chun-man, Tse Ying-suet

Hong Kong entered six badminton players into the 2024 Olympic tournament.
Tse Ying-suet and Tang Chun-man are coming back after securing fourth position in the mixed doubles event in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and will be joined by Yeung Nga-ting and Yeung Pui-lam in women’s doubles, Lo Happy Sin-yan in women’s singles and Lee Cheuk-yiu in the men’s singles.
2. Fencing: Ho Wai-hang, Cheung Ka-long, Vivian Kong, Daphne Chan

All eyes will be on fencing this year: Hong Kong’s Cheung Ka-long carved his place in history by winning gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics—the city’s first gold medal in Olympics in 25 years.
For the Paris edition, Hong Kong has entered four fencers into the Olympic competition: along with Cheung, who will compete in men’s foil category, we also have Ho Wai-hang participating in men’s épée event, Vivian Kong in women’s épée and Daphne Chan in women’s foil.

3. Judo: Wong Ka-lee

Hong Kong’s judoka Wong Ka-lee is preparing to take on her first-ever Games. She will compete in the women's category under 48 kilograms, making her the first Hong Kong judoka to compete in the Games in 12 years.
4. Gymnastics: Shek Wai-hung

For the third time, Shek Wai-hung will be representing his hometown on the vault in gymnastics at the Olympic Games.
He made his Olympics debut in London in 2012—where he became the first male gymnast to ever represent the city at the Olympics. He also took part in Tokyo Olympics 2020, where he finished 12th.
5. Rowing: Chiu Hin-chun

Chiu Hin-chun is the only Hong Kong competitive rower who has qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics. He previously qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro where he placed 19th.
6. Cycling: Lau Wan-yau, Ceci Lee Sze-wing

Ceci Lee Sze Wing, also known as the “little queen of cycling” will be competing in both the Cycling Road and Track disciplines in the Women’s Road Race and Omnium. Wan Yau Vincent Lau is set to ride in the Men’s Road Race.
7. Sailing: Akira Sakai, Russell Alysworth, Nicholas Halliday, Ma Kwan-ching, Cheng Chin-yin

Sailing holds a unique place in Hong Kong’s heart, as Lai Shan Lee won the city’s very first gold medal in windsurfing at the Atlanta Games in 1996. For this year’s edition, two boats from Hong Kong qualified for the following categories: Nicholas Halliday for the men’s ILCA7 category, and both Akira Sakai and Russell Aylsworth for the men’s 49er event.
8. Swimming: Ian Ho, Cindy Cheung, Siobhán Haughey, Tam Hoi-lam, Camille Cheng, Stephanie Au, Natalie Kan

The Hong Kong swimming team has delivered an incredible performance at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics—and expectations are high this time too.
The city will, no doubt, look forward to the performance of Siobhán Haughey, who became the first Hong Kong swimmer to win an Olympic medal and the first Hong Kong athlete to win two Olympic medals in any sport at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
This year, she’ll take part in women’s 50-metre freestyle, women’s 100-metre freestyle, women’s 200-metre freestyle, women’s 400-metre freestyle, as well as women’s 4 × 100-metre medley relay with Stephanie Au, Camille Cheng and Natalie Kan.
Ian Ho’s performance in the men’s 50-metre freestyle, Cindy Cheung’s women’s 200-metre backstroke and Tam Hoi-lam, Camille Cheng, Stephanie Au and Haughey’s women’s 4 × 100-metre freestyle relay will also be highly anticipated.
9. Taekwondo: Lo Wai-fung

In early May, Lo Wai-fung became Hong Kong’s first taekwondo fighter to qualify for the Olympic Games, after the disqualification of another player.
He participated in the Olympic Games’ Asia qualification round in Shandong, China, in March this year, and won three consecutive games in the 68kg category.
10. Table tennis: Doo Hoi-kem, Lee Ho-ching, Wong Chun-ting, Zhu Chengzhu

Bronze medallists Lee Ho-ching and Doo Hoi-kem will be competing in the Women’s Singles and Doubles. Zhu Chengzhu will be playing the Women’s Singles. Wong Chun-ting will shoot for a medal in the Men’s Singles and Mixed Doubles events.
11. Triathlon: Jason Ng

Jason Ng will be representing Hong Kong in the Men’s Individual: swimming for 1.5km, cycling for 40km and running for 10km.
12. Athletics: Felix Diu

The World Athletics Organisation allowed 24-year-old sprinter Felix Diu to compete in the Olympics in one of the “universality” spots, usually allocated for under-represented countries to increase diversity in the Games. He will be facing off against some of the best runners in the world in the Men’s 100m.
