Cover Sarawakian golfer Mirabel Ting shines in her LPGA debut, finishing tied-12th and as the top Malaysian at the Maybank Championship

In a week filled with world-class performances, Malaysia’s rising star Mirabel Ting made history with a career-best finish at the 2024 Maybank Championship, while China’s Ruoning Yin claimed the LPGA title

The 2024 Maybank Championship concluded on a thrilling note at the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club (KLGCC), with 22-year-old Ruoning Yin of China capturing her fifth LPGA Tour title. But amid the international star power, it was Malaysia’s own Mirabel Ting who stole the spotlight with a remarkable performance, marking the best-ever showing by a Malaysian in this prestigious event.

Ting, a 19-year-old amateur, delivered a stellar display of skill and composure, finishing tied for 12th place with an impressive 12-under-par 276. Her performance was the highest finish by a Malaysian at the Maybank Championship, and she outshone even major champions such as Yuka Saso, Amy Yang, and defending champion Celine Boutier. In doing so, Ting reaffirmed her status as one of Malaysia’s most promising golf talents, electrifying the home crowd and cementing her place among the LPGA’s rising stars.

Reflecting on her breakthrough performance, Ting said, “Words can’t describe how much it means to me to be able to perform this week on such a big stage. I learned a lot, especially in handling the pressure, and now I believe I can do big things.”

Joining Ting in the Malaysian ranks was Epson Tour star Ashley Lau, who also delivered a commendable performance, finishing tied for 22nd on 10-under-par 278. The pair’s achievements marked a significant moment in Malaysian golf history, further boosted by the packed galleries eager to witness homegrown talent compete alongside the world’s best.

While Ting’s success was a proud moment for Malaysia, Ruoning Yin of China delivered a masterclass in consistency and skill to claim her second title on LPGA’s Asian swing. Yin shot a spectacular seven-under-par 65 on the final day, edging out Thailand’s Jeeno Thitikul and South Korea’s Haeran Ryu by a single stroke to finish on 23-under-par 265. With this victory, Yin secured the US$450,000 top prize, adding to her growing list of accolades after winning the Buick LPGA Shanghai Championship just two weeks prior.

“I’ve learned so much this year,” Yin reflected after her win. “Earlier in the season, I felt a lot of pressure to win again, but I realised that I just need to enjoy myself and have fun out here, and that’s what I did this week.”

Thitikul, who carded a final round six-under 66, and Ryu, with a five-under 67, kept the competition fierce, but Yin’s calmness under pressure ultimately secured her fifth LPGA Tour victory.
