For one of the best basketball players in the nation, Kiefer Ravena, achieving success requires not just physical skill but also mental perseverance. "I want to play as long as I can, as long as the body is willing and the mind is willing as well," Ravena says.

During an exclusive interview with Tatler, Ravena’s charm and humility shone through. Ravena shared a significant early-life experience which changed his outlook in life. When he was still a player for La Salle Greenhills in the early 2000s, he missed a shot that would have knotted the game in a pivotal moment. For him, this encounter marked an unforgettable turning point. "It somewhat ignited the fire in me, and this is a feeling I never want to feel again," he recalls.

He spent endless hours sharpening his talents and polishing his shot in the court. Undoubtedly, his unyielding dedication to his craft is something that didn’t happen overnight; there were lots of twists and turns along the way but his determination to succeed and have a bright future was what made him into the athlete he is today.

His efforts have definitely paid off. Ravena participated in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) as a player for the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles in college. He had an outstanding career at the Ateneo and rose to prominence leading the Blue Eagles to two UAAP titles, where Ravena was twice selected as the MVP (most valuable player), in seasons 77 and 78. His ability to score, his leadership qualities on the court, and his knack for making big plays when it counted all defined his performances.
Continuing his success, Ravena’s journey took an international turn when he began playing in Japan. He takes great delight in representing the Philippines overseas. "Probably the greatest feeling is representing my country and playing internationally, showcasing the talents of Filipinos," he shares.

Uncertainties are a part of every athlete’s career, and Ravena is no stranger to it. One of the biggest disruptions for athletes worldwide was the pandemic. “There were a lot of eye-openers during that time,” he admits. The lockdowns halted games, and the indefinite future posed significant challenges. “Surrounding myself with positivity, with the correct group of people, and listening to the right advice taught me a lot." Now, Ravena has inked a deal with Yokohama for the upcoming season, continuing his path in Japan. This signing comes on the heels of Ravena’s departure from the Shiga Lakes, a team he helped win many ball games before parting ways.

Looking forward, Ravena remains committed to his sport but is also mindful of life beyond basketball.
