Carlos Yulo makes history as he becomes a two-time gold medallist in Artistic Gymnastics

Carlos Yulo does it again, winning the Philippines’ second gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics. After a spectacular finish in the Men’s Floor Exercise yesterday, he continues his hot streak at the Men’s Vault in Artistic Gymnastics where he perfectly executed Ri Se Gwang and Kasamtsu double twist vaults. Yulo’s stellar performance makes him the first and only Southeast Asian athlete to win back-to-back gold medals in the Paris 2024 Olympics—besting athletes from Armenia, the United Kingdom, Croatia, Ukraine, and Iran.

Yulo’s first vault earned him a 6.000 in difficulty and a 9.433 in execution for a total of 15.433—the highest score achieved in tonight’s event. For his second vault, he received a 5.600 in difficulty and a 9.200 in execution for a total of 14.800. His final score of 15.116 makes him the only candidate to go above 15 in the Paris 2024 Olympics Men’s Vault finals.

He placed 12th in the All-Around finals, 49th in Rings, 19th in Parallel Bars, 40th in Pommel Horse and 27th in Horizontal Bar.

The Filipino gymnast’s Ri Se Gwang and Kasamtsu double twist vaults left no room for error, landing gracefully with only a small hop to merit the highest score. Yulo bids farewell to the Olympics satisfied, with two golds hanging from his neck and the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics to look forward to.
