What does the Year of the Water Rabbit mean for you? World-renowned feng shui expert Dato' Joey Yap reveals an overview of 2023

It's the Year of the Water Rabbit and it’s shaping up to be quite an interesting year. In a sense, it can be described as a ship navigating through a sea of uncertainty. The past few years have seen significant turbulence and the future is looking no less choppy. However, we stand at the cusp of a new era as this year is also the end and beginning of a new cycle.

The characteristic of the Water Rabbit is likened to gentle, misty water above and wood below; imagery of a potted plant that is nurtured, absorbing nutrients and ready to grow. Just as with every action, there’s a reaction, every past event that has transpired sowed the seeds for future challenges and brand new opportunities.

In the study of feng shui, energy (or qi) is interlinked with time. As it is, we are currently at the tail end of Period 8, and Period 9 is set to begin from next year onwards. Among other things, Period 9 can be described as an era of exponential technological growth, the rise of women in power, and a growing need and demand for spirituality and life transformation.

This can be seen by the dominant presence of the Wood element throughout 2023. Wood represents growth, expansion, education and altruism. Sectors and industries related and in line with these values are looking to be riding on an upward trend. There’s no better time than the present to equip ourselves with new skills, new knowledge and expertise to tackle the upcoming challenges ahead.

While Wood is dominant, it would mean that Earth and Metal elements would be quite weakened. This in turn has effects on real estate, governmental bodies, and the global economy. These things are reflected in the state of the world still reeling from the threat of climate change, the refugee crisis, the economic fallout from the pandemic, and the trade wars between global superpowers which ultimately affects us all.

Nonetheless, it’s not all doom and gloom. As countries begin to recover, there is hope that the global economy will start to rebound just as the Water Rabbit symbolises seeds growing anew. Consumer spending, which drives a large portion of economic growth, is expected to increase as market sentiment is more hopeful of the future. Additionally, the low interest rate environment and the massive stimulus packages put in place by governments are set to support global economic growth.

In short, a great reset is upon us and market correction is coming. When that happens, it’s a boon for those able to provide value in what they do and those who fail to align themselves to the profit stream are likely to be wiped out, leaving more room and opportunities for those who remain. Change is inevitable; only by embracing it will you be able to thrive and prosper in 2023.

In the cycle of the 5 Elements, Wood would transform into Fire. While Fire isn’t the strongest element in 2023, the stage is set with the abundance of wood Qi this year. Fire represents politics, technology and spirituality. You may already see breakthroughs in AI technology, changes in global political sentiment and a growing need to find one’s meaning and place in this ever-changing world. Simply put, by making preparations to invest in these fields, you may reap the benefits when the spark is ignited in the future.

On a more micro level, the weakening of Earth's energy affects the stomach and digestive system as a whole. For most people, this does not have much impact health-wise. However, if one has some risks attached to it (based on your BaZi Astrology chart), it might trigger some stomach-related problems. Therefore, it’s imperative that a proper diet is observed for the entirety of the Water Rabbit year. Eat your meals on time and make sure they’re nutritious and balanced, then you won’t encounter many issues.
