Tried and tested: Unboxing Apple’s latest range of gadgets

The 16 also features a new Camera Control that enhances photography capabilities, allowing us to seamlessly open the camera app and adjust various settings without navigating through multiple menus. The Camera Control provided useful when we were taking photos in landscape, allowing us to easily zoom in and out; and wide-angled shots (also known as the 0.5 Gen Z selfie).

Speaking of the camera, the iPhone’s camera system has received significant upgrades, particularly in low-light performance, capturing better photos at night. The camera system also uses pixel-binning techniques that achieve an impressive 2x optical-quality zoom without a dedicated zoom lens.

Overall, the latest iPhone 16 offers impressive camera capabilities and powerful performance, improving user experience. While we didn’t have the chance to test out its Pro and Pro Max counterparts, the 16 proved to be a compelling choice thanks to its powerful A18 chip and user-friendly features.

The AirPods 4 has made a significant impact in the realm of wireless earbuds, especially with the introduction of Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). Previously only available on the AirPods Pro series, ANC technology effectively reduces ambient noise, which we particularly noticed while taking public transport. Although it’s not as powerful as the AirPods Pro models, the ANC still offer a noticeable improvement over previous models.

When it comes to sound quality, the latest AirPods is equipped with Apple’s H2 chip, delivering enhanced audio performance with richer bass and clearer treble. The Adaptive EQ feature automatically adjusts sounds based on how the earbuds fit into the ear, further optimising the listening experience.

With its effective noise cancellation, improved sound quality and comfortable design, the AirPods 4 is a good option for both casual listeners and dedicated audiophiles. While we wait for the release of the next AirPods Pro model, the AirPods 4 is definitely worth considering.

Celebrating its tenth anniversary, the Apple Watch Series 10 debuts as the thinnest model yet, measuring just 9.7mm—10 per cent thinner than its predecessor. The new wide-angle OLED display is also 40 per cent brighter when viewed at an angle, enhancing visibility in various lighting conditions. Apart from its design and display, the tech giant has also improved the watch’s charging speed which now reaches 80 per cent battery in 30 minutes, a significant improvement compared to earlier models.

The watch also introduces new features including sleep apnea detection, depth gauge for snorkelling, water temperature sensor for swimming and a Tides app for tidal data and sports training metrics.

On the wrist, the new watch feels much lighter than previous models, making it comfortable for all day way and even during sleep. The larger screen size was also useful when looking through notifications and apps, especially since our hands are not the most nimble. For us, the faster charging capability is a game changer as we’re one to easily forget to charge our products overnight. 

Don’t overlook the iPad Mini due to its size. The compact yet powerful device uses a new A17 Pro chip which significantly boosts performance, allowing for smooth multitasking. The latest chip also means the iPad supports advanced graphics capabilities making great for games.

The latest iPad also supports the Apple Pencil Pro. Like the iPad, iPad Air and iPad Pro, the pencil attaches magnetically to the latest gadget.

We found that the device’s lightweight design makes it easy to carry around. With the addition of the Apple Pencil Pro, it’s now convenient to take notes on the go. The device also boasts an improved battery life, lasting up to 11.5 hours on continuous video playback at 50 per cent brightness—this means we were able to use the device on long car and plane journeys without the need to recharge. Overall, the iPad Mini 7 offers an appealing blend of portability and power, a huge upgrade from much older models.
