Experiencing luxury driving with an entry-level SUV is unheard of, but Lexus proves otherwise

When thinking about the ideal car, there are many considerations. For one, it should suit personality and needs. Technical aspects matter too, especially in today’s world of sustainable lifestyle choices. And of course, the presence of that thrill and joy felt behind the wheel and driving around the city. It is a luxury car all right, equated with incredibly high cost, certainly not an entry-level SUV. But Japanese luxury car brand Lexus has debunked this notion with its Lexus UX (short for Urban Explorer).

Founded in 1989, Lexus has been relentlessly pursuing perfection and has recently been at the forefront of making eco-friendly vehicles in Asia. The Lexus UX, its perfect entry-level SUV, not only passes all the criteria of luxury driving but offers more with its innovative design, luxurious features and advanced safety in a package of efficient engine and contemporary style.

At the heart of each creation of Lexus is the takumi spirit, which is behind the Japanese concept of craftsmanship. The brand commits to high standards of excellence and meticulous artistry and science with its every creation. This is manifested in Lexus UX’s interiors where Sashiko (an age-old Japanese embroidery art) quilted leather seats keep occupants cool and comfortable, especially on long journeys. Also, the dashboard trim brings in unique washi-inspired (traditional Japanese paper) elements. The design of the vehicle’s shoulders, centre console and armrests are shaped perfectly to envelop riders safely. Not to mention, Lexus UX has a fancy feature where airconditioning knobs with LED illumination powered by electromagnetic resonance make it appear as if they’re floating.

The UX series is primarily designed with the urban environment in mind, making it easy to drive through the city’s heat, pollution, and traffic. Aside from the UX 200 and UX 200 F Sport having 6.2 L / 100 km fuel consumption and 168 HP, its usage of Global Architecture Compact (GA-C), delivers fundamental high structural rigidity and a low centre of gravity, thus securing excellent ride quality and stability. Its lowered design gives a secured ride because of its aerodynamics and powerful engine. Worth mentioning also is its razor-sharp steering response. Altogether, easing into wide avenues and narrow city streets is achieved.

Above Lexus UX on the road

This driver-centric technology and engineering are evident even on UX’s exteriors. The seamless design that brings the outside in is akin to the traditional Japanese architectural concept of engawa. Here, the upper section of the instrument panel appears to extend beyond the windshield into the front of the car. This gives the driver an infinite view of the road and beyond, which is an important safety feature to let the driver keep their eyes on the road. Aside from this, all controls and gauges are within reach and sight for optimal efficiency, as the melding of the centre console box and palm rest into a single long armrest provides maximum convenience and comfort.

In today’s fast-paced world where discerning tastes strive for not only form and function, but also masterful artistry and sustainability, Lexus has redefined luxury. And it is not any more an elusive ideal but a tangible gratification. You just need to go the distance.
