Blithe spirits run high at Tim Yap’s annual Halloween celebration with the theme and title, ‘Shake, Rattle & Ball’

Spooky season is here, and the ghouls have come out to play. On October 30, celebrities and illustrious personalities gathered at the National Museum of Anthropology for Tim Yap’s All Hallows’ Eve celebration, ‘Shake, Rattle & Ball. ‘

Yap says Halloween is much influenced by Westen culture, so I wanted to make us realise that our folklore and mythology are rich and filled with characters and inspiration, that we can look inward and find means of expression without looking elsewhere.

The event also served as the official opening to Alamat, an art exhibition that explores elements of Philippine myth and folklore with works by local artists.

The party's name is derived from the seminal Filipino horror film series Shake Rattle & Roll. It is the brainchild of eventologist Yap, who drew deeply on the fantastical, macabre elements of Filipino mythology.

Each year, Yap develops a theme for his party that he feels is relevant to the cultural atmosphere of its time.

One year, right before the pandemic, it was Apocalypse, and then after the pandemic, it was Dystopia. Now, I plan to call it Shake, Rattle, and Ball collectively. I will just change themes yearly, depending on what we are going through—the zeitgeist of our times,” Yap shares.

”The core is to be creative, says Yap. I want to put out something deeper, more meaningful, and rooted in culture and share it with everyone. Still, I also want [the participants] to realise that the theme is subject to their interpretation... and that the Pinoy theme is very rich they can either be grotesque or pursue a fantasy—your call. This is your Halloween, not mine.”

Actress and social media personality Andrea Brillantes was co-chair of the event. She wore an extravagant sartorial interpretation of the manananggal, a female vampire-like creature in Filipino myth.

Other stars such as Anne Curtis, Piolo Pascual, Donny Pangilinan and Belle Mariano were also spotted enjoying the spine-tingling festivities.
