From Robin Williams on two wheels to Margot Robbie on ice, these sporty celebrities aren't just playing dress-up. They’re playing to win

Most red carpet regulars wouldn’t be caught dead breaking a sweat. But some celebrities? They swap couture for cleats the minute they clock out. Whether it’s fencing, long-distance cycling or snowboarding, these celebrities train like athletes when no one’s watching.

These aren’t actors moonlighting as gym rats. These are full-on sports nerds. The kind who know their split times, have custom gear and just might own more compression wear than couture. Here are some of the most impressively sporty celebrities you didn’t realise were training harder than a Marvel cast in prep mode.

1. Robin Williams (cycling)

Forget comedy—Robin Williams’ greatest passion might’ve been bikes. The late actor was an obsessive cyclist, owning over 100 high-end bicycles. He rode daily, trained with pros and was close friends with cycling legends like Lance Armstrong. He once called biking his form of meditation. His collection even went up for auction, benefiting charity—and yes, it included rare models most Tour de France competitors would covet.

2. Margot Robbie (ice hockey)

The Aussie beauty didn’t just play Tonya Harding—she once was Tonya-adjacent. Margot Robbie grew up playing ice hockey on a boys’ team in Queensland, where she held her own as a right winger. She still skates recreationally and even did some of her own stunts in I, Tonya—because method acting is real, and so are bruised shins.

3. Jason Statham (competitive diving)

Before he was dodging explosions and fighting sharks in The Meg, Jason Statham was on Britain’s national diving team. In the ’90s, he competed in the Commonwealth Games, launching himself off 10-metre boards with perfect form. Dive into YouTube and you’ll find footage of a very svelte, Speedo-clad Statham flipping like an Olympic hopeful.

4. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (equestrianism)

Jason Statham’s life partner isn’t resting on her laurels either. Before becoming a Victoria’s Secret angel and launching a beauty empire, Rosie was a hardcore equestrian. Raised on a farm in Devon, she competed in dressage and show jumping as a teen. She still rides whenever she can, proving that even the glossiest models can muck out a stable.

5. Matthew Perry (tennis)

Before he was Chandler Bing, Matthew Perry was this close to being the next Andre Agassi. The late actor was a top-ranked junior tennis player in Canada, known for a mean serve and competitive streak. He used to practise over 10 hours a day. He gave up the sport to pursue acting, but that muscle memory (and the country club charm) never left.

6. Kaley Cuoco (equestrianism)

You know her from The Big Bang Theory, but did you know that in Season 4, Kaley Cuoco badly broke her leg from a horse-riding accident? She had to hide her leg for most of the shoots. Truth is, Cuoco is far more interested in jump-offs than sitcom punchlines. She’s a serious show jumper with a barn full of champion horses and a schedule that includes real competitions, not just celebrity charity gigs. Her horse Instagram is more active than most A-listers’ main accounts—and she was formerly married to a fellow equestrian.

7. Joe Manganiello (basketball)

While Joe Mangianiello’s Dungeons & Dragons obsession is well-documented (and let’s be honest, very cool), especially to those who watched The Big Bang Theory, his basketball skills are often overlooked. At 6’5”, he played varsity ball in high school and still hits the court regularly. These days, however, he plays more for charity tournaments than NBA dreams.
